No kidding. It’s easy to forget and leave it on. I have 2 old backup analog calipers and always keep a spare battery!

The old-school caliper my father used as a Quality Control Engineer. 10,000,000 space-bucks to the person who can read what it measured. Also, just a tweensy-bit past last calibration.

Is there no one who can read an old-school caliper?

Well, this vernier caliper is vexing because it mentions both mm and thousandths of inches. I have not seen that combination before.

Response in either mm or inches is fine. You will notice that 1 in takes up 2.5-ish cm.

    I want to keep my 10,000,000 space-bucks, so ...

The 0 on the sliding bar says it is between .125 and .150. You find the best lineup of the bars on the center bar and the bars on the slider to get the remainder between .125 and .150. Same method for the mm side.

Exactly. Not so easy to read the exact on those, but these days +- .001 in is not my worry.

Close only counts in horseshoes and hand-grenades (global thermonuclear war is just another class of hand-grenade).

I'll go completely against the grain here, but I recommend neither :anonymous:

And what I really mean is both are solid options; I personally think Milwaukee can't be beat. With that being said, I keep in mind that you (like me) are a novice DIY'er with no intent to rely on these tools as a means of income. If I were to recommend the best of the best for reliability purposes to someone who needed tools daily to make a living, I'd go with your top 2 choices. For me, my platform of choice is Ridgid from Home Depot. They're always on sale, they're budget friendly, lifetime warranty on tools and batteries, always in stock, and are actually pretty reliable from my experience. I think its important to recognize that us novice DIY guys are (usually) a jack of all trades; meaning we're (usually) masters at none. I enjoy buying budget friendly to score more tools to play with verses getting the best of one particular tool and trying to master it. Maybe not the right outlook, but its just the truth. So if you find yourself in that same camp, I'd highly consider Ridgid, or crazy enough, stick with Ryobi. My other 'against the grain' opinion to chime in here is the cheaper brands get bashed alot for cordless tool batteries not lasting, when the user is probably doing a job better suited for a corded tool. Its really not fair to run any brand of cordless sander for 8 hours straight and not expect to go through countless batteries. All in all, my vote is "don't get caught up in brands; Ryobi is a hell of a tool line for a weekend warrior, and Ridgid is a nice small upgrade."

I totally agree. I've had my Ryobi tools for many years without any failures. If I made a living with my tools, then yeah, get the top tier stuff.
    Save the money for
    a. More tools if you need them,
    b. Top end tools for when it really matters. (quality Chisels, planes, etc...)
