When you are cutting 1/2 if the leg away in that slot, all your senses are telling you that the leg will fail catastrophically. But when the cross-beam slips in you feel it firm up and become able to take more cross-body blows than 4 simple legs.

This picture shows the full table. Repeat the in-cuts at the top just under the checkers, and maybe a slot for books. Clearly the 2 flipdowns are more than a table requires.

Here are a few other legs I saved that I thought were interesting. Not sure how they match with the style of the tabl, but interesting.

Large shelf, 8 ft before it was decapitated to get it out of the basement, 4 ft wide. Crude mortice and tenon to let walls be thin and much open space.

We have a glowforge. My gf uses it the most. One of her favorite things to make is old recipes on cutting boards. She scans the hand written ones and then lasers them onto the cutting board.

This one was for the neighbor. They are family to us. Their son was killed in an accident. We were able to get some of his hand writing from his sister to make this plaque for her. He was a good kid. Damn it's getting dusty in here...

Did you put anything on top of the glass before you lasered it?
