Is Facebook Marketplace a blessing or a curse?

Just picked up this new in the box Jet DC-1100VX Dust Collector locally for $600. Now I need to get some hose and connectors. Hopefully once it is setup I can get my sawdust mess under control.

Basic-white-girl cutting boards hammered out yesterday while waiting on the poly to dry on another hunting portrait I lasered over the weekend.

I only say this because I do not know your son ...

I hope your son appreciates that he has something of much better quality than IKEA ...

My son decided yesterday that he's not going back into the dorm next yeat and is moving in with someone that has been approved for a college apartment. Now we need to start getting things that he'll need figured out because the dorms were furnished and the apartment isn't.

If you have not sorted out the bed ... Serta Never-Flat (inftatable mattress, 500 lb capacity, queen size, 18 inches thick) with secondary pump that will add-back whenever pressure drops automatically. $180-ish. I started using it when I started cross-country moves and still like being able to travel light.

Same here. Dorms last year, furnished apartment this year, unfurnished apartment next year.

Coffee and end tables are also on the to-do list.

I need a woodworking/engineering opinion. I want to make a nice serving tray as a wedding present for a nephew. I have a tray already, which any competent finish-woodworker would say "too many imperfect coats of poly" ... they would be correct. But they might accept it because it is personally-constructed.

If your opinion is "not sturdy enough", I will restart with a better design.

First picture is the side/top angle. Second picture is reinforcement I hope will fix it. Since it started as a rehab project, joining two failed previous projects. Reinforcement is needed because the bottom (3/4 in thick) is edge-glued to the top rim horizontally -- NOT vertically. I am adding 1/4 in poplar dowels, in roughly 45 degree holes. The dowels are 3 in long, the picture shows one of the dowels almost inserted ... well the sample peg taped on tells the tale. I cannot pound any more at 11 PM in my apartment. And you can see how much dowel remains to go in.

The center strips are alternating walnut and oak. The rest of the tray is poplar.

Will 8 dowels, inserted 2 at each corner at 45 degrees, at the depth you can predict, be enough to make the top-rim-to-bottom-plate attachment strong enough to last for years?

If you added wood glue in with your dowel joint, then the joint itself is probably stronger then the actual wood. Meaning that the wood would fail before the joint, for clarification.

Thanks for that. I hoped it might be string enough, using the angle to my advantage.
