In my teens and 20s I refinished and repaired antique furniture and did finish carpentry; building cabinets, bar tops, custom built-ins.

Here are a couple of gifts for family members I turned on a lathe a few years ago. It was all I was able to do before I had to stop due to pending surgeries and my inability to keep myself from getting re-injured. I'm recovering from spinal fusion and achilles reattachment, about 7 more months and I'm supposed to be 100%.

I have a number of tables and built-ins that are on the list for when I'm ready to get back in the shop.

UPDATE: all dowels are in at 45-ish degrees. The accumulated support with glue/dowels should supplement the wood glue and layers of poly to make a plastic shell.

Some of the dowels broke off ragged, one or 2 of the 8 could be cut flush. To equalize them as a surface effect of the holes I gathered up poplar sawdust from poplar wides and dowels and filled as compacted as I can, then will seal holes with poly. To minimize the "different from the other poplar" appearance I will use no glue in the sawdust or cheap wood filler which will stain different from the sawdust (even sawdust will stain different from the solid parts ... damn!).

A couple of the dowels did not go in far enough, had to be drilled out again. One re-drill erupted out the side of the top-rim ... not enough to affect structure though. Sawdust will fill that hole and be stained only (no glue or wood filler) to make it arrear only a minor scar.

No stores open selling the poly until tomorrow AM. If this "fumble recover" turns out as simply an exercise in technique because it failed, I will re-start from scratch for the wedding present.

So on our Tacoma camp outings we have a tendency to have a few refreshments after a long day of riding the trails. I thought it might be handy to have a portable travel bar. After scoping out a few online, I came up with rough plans and made a rough prototype to try out on our last trip. It was eminently successful, so now I'm building the finished version now. It's a fun project.

    The rough prototype:
