Yes same here, but without a lock button take the top collect nut and collet off the only way to hold the shaft is with a screwdriver from inside. On yours you could get a wrench on the shaft?

Yep. My Skill and Dewalts are like that. The small trim router has a button.

If we are all being honest here, if you pair the correct size Phillips bit with the same screw then they are fine.. but I don’t.. I’ve got a hodge podge of different size bits, screwdrivers, etc and just grab what’s in sight first which usually leads to stripping them.

As far as bits, I buy the exact same ones for all my torx sets.

Phillips it’s literally a drawer of bits and screwdrivers from god knows where and god knows how old

    You missed my point.

The collet chuck on the shaft itself came loose. The lower part.

That is for just installing a bit. Easy, but if lower part is loose on the router shaft, no good. Makita only gives you a slot to hold the shaft while tightening the collet chuck with single wrench. No other way.

It looks like in the picture above that you should be able to put a wrench on the collet and using an allen key to tighten the screw on the inside of the shaft. You can see it in the shadow of this picture. We have a dewalt drill that we had to replace the collet and it looked similar. The screw was on the inside. If I recall correctly, the screw was reverse threaded and covered with loctite but your mileage may vary.

The cross-shape of the Phillips is not the problem. I have a greater issue with the material of the screw and the material it is used. Dense wood or metal that is not pre-drilled enough using "common zinc" wood screws almost guarantees a stripped head and much tiny metal sharding. The newer torx screws tend to be made of harder stuff than zinc and the torx shape allows better contact for "cranking down" or the "driver" setting of a drill/driver.

Ah, I did. My apologies. Have you tried some red lock tite on the threads?

It's just a blind round unthreaded hole in the end of the shaft unfortunately.
It's tight now and has not come loose again. Indeed if it comes loose, it will be Loctited.

It sounds like you "solved" your issue for now, what happens if you pull the two screws on either side of the shaft? It looks like it holds that metal plate down. Perhaps this screws are the only thing holding it in?

I imagine there is a seal and bearing under there. No need to mess with it. I think Makita uses a special tool at the factory, or did for this model.
