That's a horrible idea. What time?
Can you get a close up of the end grain?[/QUOTE]

End grain and a little better shot of the grain on two of the boards that were glued up.

I am currently using Hercules blades from Harbor Freight on my table saw and miter saw. I tried to use a Diablo on my table saw, but the thin kerf does not work with my riving knife. I do still use a Diablo dado stack. My Father In Law uses fancy Forrester Blades on all of his tools and honestly I can’t see a big difference. I just make sure that my blade it sharp. When they start to get dull, I toss them and buy a fresh one. I currently have an 80 tooth Hercules on my miter saw just for breaking down to rough length.

For fine woodworking, I use Forest blades. I have a Woodworker II on my tablesaw, and it cuts nice and smooth. I only it for "good" wood and projects. I have a general purpose blade for other cutting.

High end blades can usually be resharpened, extending the blade life.

I see you used pocket screws for the top. Besides glue, did you use pocket screws for the legs and side pieces as well?

I have that same blade on my table saw too. It's great. I have had it sharpened once and it came back like new. I ended up getting a cheap Diablo for the new miter saw because I needed it right now. It cuts very nice, so I'll see how it goes. I don't expect to be doing a ton of furniture quality work on the miter saw, so maybe I don't need a Forrest for that saw.

The base is assembled with glue and Dominos. Sorry no pictures of that step. I am using pocket holes to attach the top because this will hold a dog food bowl and get lots of abuse. I want the top to be easily removable for any needed repairs or replacement. I used 8/4 Alder for the legs which are tapered on two sides and 4/4 Alder for the rest. The sides for the top were planed down to 1/2 inch.

Here is the top just resting on the base. Everything needs another coat or two of finish.

Coworker finally brought the neglected cutting board to work and I decided to take on the challenge.

I didn't want to make this perfect.. I tried to leave a lot of character in it as it's nearly 40 years old.

I think the coworker will be satisfied.

I use Walrus Oil Cutting Board Oil. These photos are fresh. It will absorb in and the excess will be wiped off for a matte finish.

Man...I fell into the cutting board rabbit hole a while back.

It started when I removed an old dead apple tree branch from one of our overgrown apple trees. Thinking I could cut the logs (about 8" diameter) into flats and then use the endgrain to glue up some really hard cutting boards, I jumped right in. I made it as far as the planer. Whilst trying to Plane these super-hard pieces, my planer wasn't cooperating. Finally, in a fit of rage, the planer grabbed one of the pieces, and launched it across my barn, right through a (closed) single pane window, and 15 feet into the yard.

Well...after I sent the wife out to buy new glass, and got it glazed in, I took put the planer away and put my thinking cap on. I came up with big belt sander or drum sander was the solution to the problem. Got online and looked like $1500 would buy what I needed. Seemed a little pricey to make a cutting board, so I looked on FB Marketplace and Craigslist for used. Nothing. And then it came to me, I'll just build a drum sander myself. As the whole "Launching apple block through a window" thing proves, I've got mad skilz!

Did it work? You tell me.

Every woodworking project eventually turns into a sanding project. One more tool to tackle it.

The bottom pic is the ash on top of the hickory. The light piece is also ash the is flat sawn. The darker ash is quarter saw.

Planers are not meant for end grain stuff... luckily it was just a window and not something more serious!

I invested in a drum sander a couple years ago specifically for end grain stuff.

Cool project you built there! Thanks for sharing
