It seems good so far. Pipe, for the most part, isn't particularly round. It looks round until you put it on a lathe and then you find out it isn't even close.

After I had the drum mounted on the sander and adjusted to be square with the risers and the table top, I used a piece of sandpaper mounted to a board on the table top to sand the drum into round, by lowering the spinning bare drum onto the sandpaper (essentially a big sanding block). That would have taken any warp out of it as well, but doesn't mean it won't return.

Now that I know the concept works, I could definitely make a new drum out of steel or aluminum if the PVC doesn't hold up well. Or, if the PVC last 10 years....I can just make another pvc one.

Ohh...and the 3/4" steel gas pipe I used for a shaft does go all the way through the center of the drum with 4 each 1-1/2" wide wood supports, one on each end and two spaced evenly between, that are press fit and glued onto the shaft and ID of the PVC. So for the PVC to warp it has to overcome the support of the shaft and wood spacers.

The feature I like on commercial sanders (that my design doesn't allow) is an open side where you can double your effective sander width by making 2 passes across a board, flipping it around after each pass to sand the other side. On mine it would hit the riser block.

Nice, looks like it will do the job for sure.

First day of vacation and I decided to take advantage of the low winds and have a burn day. Shipping crate for the planer just disappeared!

Working on this outside burn box now.
    20231220_112237.jpg
Then I have the shop scrap box to carry out and burn.20231220_110749.jpg
We'll see how much I get done, the ash burns really slow and hot. Man I wish I had a wood stove.

Well.. the coworker was trying real hard to hold back happy tears. The cutting board belonged to her father who has passed and I was able to give her and her sisters back a piece of their history.

This was on pass number 3... in case anyone was curious how bad of shape this board was in.

i've got grizzly's "baby" drum sander, and i really like that little thing. it's mostly used for getting really thin stuff for inlays and crap. :)

got a small table i'm fixing up for someone now. kinda funky, cause the bottom shelf is basically a bigass V -- guessing it's for holding books.

I went to home depot to pick up a couple of plug ends to make an extension cord for the planer. Of course there's tons of stuff in the center isle for christ.as. I saw this kit for $15 so I grabbed it, I needed some new bits. And this even has the square socket drives for my impact gun. I don't think you can buy just those drives for that, maybe. Lol

I bought that same pack this time last year!
I still haven’t used it, but I’m sure I will eventually.

My niece is into anime and at Thanksgiving asked me to make a 3 legged chair from a very popular movie for her. She lives far away and the only time I was going to see her, before she goes to an anime event where she wants to take the chair, is Christmas.

I know nothing about anime but making a small (so small it's not usable) 3 legged prop chair? No problem. But I forgot until yesterday and we are traveling to southern Cal in a few days. So today was design, cut, sand and start the glue up. I'm woefully short of clamps (who isn't?), so just the back is being done now. I think in a few hours I can scavenge some of the clamps and get the bottom glued tonight. Tomorrow will be trimming, finish sanding then prime, maybe paint.

Any thoughts on removing some clamps after a few hours? Titebond II...

If you leave the corner and middle-of-the-side ones for longer than the others, you will get a sense of when it is fully set.

Yeah you can remove the clamps after a few hours, it just wont have full bond strength until 24 hours.

I used a 10 gage cord and made a 220v extension cord for the new planer.
    20231223_123049.jpg
I think I need to make a hook to attach to the belt cover for the cord.

I was sorting through some ash boards to determine which sides I wanted to run through the jointer when something shiney caught my eye.
A tiny nail that I sawed through with the circ saw.
    20231223_132900.jpg
    I dug it out.
    20231223_133510.jpg
Small piece, but big enough to damage a jointer or planer knife.
    20231223_133525.jpg
It was a backyard tree. When I milled it 10 years ago I even found buckshot in the upper sections, lol.

Well I finally got some other projects out of the way and I'm getting back on the work bench build.
All of the stock for the leg ends are laminated and jointed on 2 sides, ready for the planer to dimension them.
    20231223_140745.jpg
I matched up the boards for the long cross stretchers ands started to run them Through the jointer to prep them for glue up. I hope to finish the jointing tomorrow.
