Any woodworkers?

I second this.

 

I tried to make a template from the first piece, but it's hardboard (cause the piece needs to be lighter or I would have used something stiffer) so the flexibility was a little problematic for cutting.

I've never really looked into router templates yet. I haven't gotten here yet. Is there a good place to purchase templates or a method for creating a good one?

 

Youd have to make one for that type thing. People use MDF or plexiglass. You could talk to people on etsy that have other templates they could make you one.

Thats a one off piece, so might be better to make your own. Cut it with a small bandsaw, then sand with a spindle sander. The narrow leg might be a problem with the router but id think it would cut it ok.

 

ok. Yeah, I was sorta doing the best with what I have available to me. I don't have a bandsaw or a spindle sander. I was afraid the router would be too much for the hardboard. I didn't have a great way to support it so the cutting was...adventurous.

 

Yeah thin band like that would be tough. Even with a router it might tear out that section.

What if you had a piece double the width and used a hole saw to make the arches, then cut it in half lengthwise and then finished the arches?

 

So my thumb is feeling a little better , I put my brace on and went to the shop. I've been away for far to long. Now that ythe drill press is operational again it's time to finish drilling the corner holes.

The I switched to a larger forster bit to drill out the bulk of the waste.

Drill one row and then flip the piece and drill the other side.

I clamped another board to the front of the drill press table to help hold the workpiece against the fence. This made it easier with my sore thumb.

Then I drilled out the remaining waste.

The drilling carnage, lol.

 

Now it's time to chop out the mortices square. I need my old bench to work on making the new bench so I solid the top onto my saw outfeedd table. Man it is seriously heavy.

Now I can clamp a work piece to the bench to chop out the rest of the waste and square up the mortice.

This is going to take some time with my sore thumb, but it's actually good therapy. I just can't do too much at one time.

 

Made decent progress on Redwood Lounge Chair #2 last night and today.

 

Old patio chairs when built in 2020. This set was a replacement for the old ones of the same design that became to rotted to sit in.

One down and seven to go for this stage of the legs.

I'm keeping the sharpening platten out for chisel touch ups.

I get about 1/2 to 1 mortice done before my thumb gets sore. So this is going to take some time yet. It is healing and gets a a little better everyday.

 

Added structure and shelving to my rock wall, made spray can storage out of some leftover redwood, and tried to finish a stable drop point for my extra 1UP tray. And a pinewood derby car rough cut. No fine finish endeavors, but a productive Sunday.

 

That reminds me of the boxcar racer I built 34 years ago when I was in the Scouts. Looked eerily like that. I sanded it smooth and painted it gloss white with an airbrush and polished the axles buttery smooth also ran that graphite lube. We had to add weights to get it back in spec. Mine was CO2 powered and still lost. Came in 3rd I believe, been a long time.

Why not make a set for yourself? I could share a couple of hints to make it easier.

 

Cause I don't wanna buy tools and make a mess with wood shavings
