Not much woodworking here, but I milled this board in Los Padres National Forest and then used the Festool circular saw system for some clean edges. I’m not sure if it’s Jeffry Pine or Lodgepole. According to the rings, that thickness took over 20 years. And the knot in the middle, I stopped counting the rings. They got super tight on the outside. That was an old branch!!! Seems like old growth.

I have to decide aluminum or steel legs. I’m opting for aluminum at the moment.

That was a super fun day. 8,000’ so I had to take my ported 3120FP. I used the 390FP to cross cut.

And the Yota having fun also:hattip:

I left that piece in hopes that it would be used as a bench. So far so good. Great place to rest now.

That's a horrible idea. What time?
I have created a dilemma for my self. I think this came out too nice to hide under a computer. I'm thinking about inserting it into the front of the desktop. Except it's well beyond anything I've done and what I think I'd trust me and my job site table saw to to. Thoughts or advice?

Long time lurker first time poster in this thread. I picked up some semi truck flooring to make a few small kitchen shelf’s adjacent to our corner cabinet. Just wondering if cleaning the wood with a pressure washer at the car wash is my best bet to clean it up a bit before I start sanding and cutting. Pic of similar wood from the interwebs since I’m too lazy to go out into the garage and take a pic!

Googlefu recommended sawdust or baking soda, but if it's dry I'm not sure how that would work. (My search: How do you get dried oil stains out of wood?)

Do you access to a planer? Or a wood shop that could clean it up for you? (You said it's for a kitchen, I'd want to get as much of that surface off as I could as you never know what's been spilled on it or what that truck has carried.) If not, slap some 40 grit on a belt sander and go for it. With a mask on.

Is it going to touch food or just shelf? Id use deck cleaner on it and spray off with pressure washer. Then rent a floor sander if you have big planks or planer

It’s mostly going to hold kitchen spices. So not really touching foods. I’m also thinking I’m gonna seal it in an epoxy resin so I’m not totally sure I need to be super concerned about getting it pristine. But IDK since I’ve never really worked with wood that was too dirty!

You could use clear dawn dish soap and scrub grease out then sand to your liking. Spar urethane or salad bowl finish is what id use.

Still scrolling away when I get an hour or 2 in the shop. 58 so far, about 30 ish or so to go in this batch. This production work has taught me some things about being efficient.

No jigs, no fixtures, just freehand scrolling. I did make a pattern that I trace around.

I worked in a woodworking shop years ago, made parts for the marine industry. Always used jigs, fixtures, and patterns. Now there’s CNC’s , they take all the craftsmanship out of it.
    Nice work by the way

That’s awesome, I make little Christmas trees every year for the past 25 years, the most I made was 55 one year which was to much, this year it will be only 10 but it’s still a lot of fun, friend's and family always seem to enjoy them

We used to call this a labor of love. Almost impossible to sell at a price that reflects the time invested in creating them. Back when life wasn’t so busy I was scrolling these:
    IMG_3576.jpg IMG_3577.jpg
Then hand carve some of the details and then paint them to match the cat of the person I was giving it to. I love the fact that you are making them for your church. Some day I’ll get back to the scroll saw and start making them again for the people we love.

I have some Eucalyptus slabs I’m willing to thrash through bits/blades to build something. Aside from the density and how heavy this wood is, I dig the grain tremendously. I’ve been wanting to get back into wood working, I think it’s time.

Had 4 steel legs on the shelf and thought I’d take a peek. It handles 2 people like a concrete slab!

Me older bro is the one getting my blood boiling for wood work again.

Above all this, he has an air filter system too. Not surprised, when we was kids back in East L.A., we’d climb the hill to go play football at City Terrace Park. Well, one day, unbeknown to the rest of us, my big bro showed up with a helmet made of cardboard! And I mean we was all jealous to the bone!!!! :rofl:and mind you, it held well and looked bad ass, crazy.

So I’m not surprised by his thinking. Good stuff.
