If your intent was the first picture, except for the gap between the support and the tabletop ... here is a thought ...

Having that remote corner hanging without support or the joined staves unsupported is iffy. But a full-double thick top can be visually clunky. You could do a diagonal piece that has the same type (if if have that much more wood of the same set) from that unsupported corner to the remote dangling-corner, maybe with a wing to the 4x4 support leg. If the edge of that under-piece is routed at 45 degrees (maybe 50 degrees) to "disappear" under the tabletop but full-thick at the support-gap.

Visually less clunky, more support for the corners.

That's a horrible idea. What time?
Made some progress on the mistake. I opted to split the 4x4 and found no surprises inside. I had to cut twice because the thickness of the post was taller than the blade. And the second cut drifted as I couldn't figure out how to use the fence while making the cut. Fixed it up with the router.
    20241213_152416.jpg

Added a "foot" to each post so I can add the leveling feet. Once the glue dries I made add a couple of long narrow screws or a block behind the feet for more support.

Thank you hometown, what I like the most about those saw horses are the non-slip feature. I didn’t have to clamp down the oak slab. I’ve done larger pieces too, just in sections, and using aluminum straight edge clamps.

I’m thinking of the next piece. Eucalyptus. Similar to the one I have near the fireplace, but thicker. Shoot, I have to clean up this area :anonymous: The top piece was the Oak.

Got back into the shop for the first time in many months. Restored this old 40s Lane cedar chest and made some cherry floating shelves for the bedroom

Just came up from the shop, had the new old stereo jammin! Sanded 36 crosses and got them oiled. Good day in the shop.
My happy place. Even though it's a wreck at the moment.

At the far end the new workbench in progress is sitting on top of the old workbench so I don't have a workbench right now. I just use the table saw outfeed table.

So I gave it some thought, and the only material I had left to extend the desk over the gap was for the monitor. I thought about taking part of that to fill the gap, realized two things. First, the monitor is 33" wide (from my brief work from home stint), and that would make the monitor stand seem too small. The second thing happened when I put my chair under it (after clamping the desk to the shelf stand). The stand took about 25% of the chair space and had me a little off center on the desk, and I wasn't crazy about it.

I opted to split the post instead. That went fairly well.

This desk update comes to you from the desk!!

Got after it about 10 am this morning after finding out the kerosene heater wouldn't light. It appears the ignitor has left the building. A few matches later and I had a flame.

First up was sanding the monitor stand and getting some satin poly on that and leg the posts.
    upload_2024-12-14_20-19-14.jpg

Next up, back in the house, laid out the desk legs and shelf on the bottom of the desk, and carried all of it to the garage. I glued mounting plates to the desk bottom and installed the adjustable feet on the legs and shelf. To give the glue more time to set up, I sanded the monitor stand and applied another coat of poly. Only one pic of the shelf section plates in clamps (under a nice ash slab).
    upload_2024-12-14_20-26-56.jpg

A few no pictures later, the threaded inserts are installed in the mounting plates, all necessary (and one unnecessary) holes are drilled and the legs are mounted. And the kerosene heater was turned off as the garage was near 70 degrees!
    upload_2024-12-14_20-28-50.jpg
    upload_2024-12-14_20-29-14.jpg

Break it all down, touch up the poly on the monitor stand and one leg. And....

Yes, the office is a mess and I have some wires to hide. That's tomorrow's project, before the Lion's / Bills game. And that's my truck in Winslow AZ, part of a two week trip in and around the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, and some other cools stops. (Trip report in the signature area.)

Overall, I'm pretty happy with my first large project in about five years. Several firsts including the walnut glue up, working with hickory and that glue up. I had to remove a slight twist in dad's walnut slab and the 4x4 walnut post. I tried the power tool route for the joinery with mixed results and have more determination to move forward with more hand cuts. I think I put dad's walnut to good use and think he would be proud of the job.

One more thing he was proud of is in this picture. I had a rough adjustment to a new school and was bullied because I was a big guy who wouldn't fight. (Unless I had to defend someone who couldn't defend themselves. Then is was a street fight.) I found some peace in wood shop in 7th grade. My first project, and one of the few "A's" I saw back then is to the right of the monitor. The "T" on the plaque. Mr. Brown was the shop teacher and this was all done with hand tools. Even the sanding, which wasn't much as the plaque was store bought. It has my name on the back with an "A". Dad was happy and proud of what I had done. We hung that in my bedroom. Now it hangs next to my desk made in part with wood from his shop with some of his tools.

    It's been a good day.

I was just spitballing. And the desk did seem a bit small for an "L" anyway. BUT ... By splitting the 4x4 you now have the "pieced-together" section supported.

Overall ... nice recovery and redesign.

Middle-school and high-school sucks ... too many posturing pr%cks who learn only in the real world the cost of their behavior ... too late for you though. Keep doing what brings you peace of mind.

Finally ... as to "messy office" ... that desk I built is 15 ft long and 2 ft deep ... and barely 1 sq ft is NOT covered by barely managed chaos!:rofl:

Jumped back into the shop yesterday to start a Christmas present for a good friend from (where I used to) work. He befriended me in onboarding (I was a new hire, he transferred in) and we've been good friends since. Cutting board and service tray. Cutting board has first coat of cutting board oil on. Tray has been cut down to size (18" surface area) and the handles are in glue. This will get the poly I put in the desk.

Edge to center is Walnut, hickory, sapeli, purple heart, white oak, sapeli and reversed back out.

The walnut is nicely accentuated, but the purple heart transition to sapeli may be harder to see after the oil. Still ... nice work. I am always amazed at how the human eye can spot non-parallel lines (I see none in your work) while not being able to measure just how far out of parallel they are.

    Thanks!

The purple heart stands out, just not in the picture. And the grain directions change as well. When it's oiled and dried and I get some better light I'll get another picture.
