Are they all the same species? That middle piece looks a little like poplar.

What is American walnut??? Never heard of that in my 45+ years as a forester.

I have heard the term 'white walnut' which is actually butternut.

But, I understand there are 'local' names for tree species depending on where you might live. IE: Black gum, tupelo, and pepperidge are all the same tree. Also: Tulip poplar, tulip tree, yellow poplar, and whitewood are all the same species of tree.

That's a horrible idea. What time?
Been away meeting with the builder in the house, so this sat idle for a week. Couldn't get rid of the glare from the basement lights.

Done and being delivered this week.

And the new shop area will be framed this week. 2x6 with spray foam, insulated metal doors, and a mini split.

The project looks great and the shop has me feeling jealous. I am thinking of having a mini split installed in my garage and insulating both garage doors in the near future. The summers here are brutal!

We're going to have heat and humidity in July / August to deal with. We're also in a nature reserve, so the thicker walls and insulated doors will help keep the noise down. Builder is going to get the shop area done so I can use it to build stuff at the house instead of here and hauling it 550+ miles.

There is another advantage to a better garage door, even if the risk is just remote. The default flimsy thin sheet fiberglass garage doors can be pushed-in at the top, the red pull-handle accessed and then the door opened. The thicker-heavier garage doors cannot be warped/pushed-in like the thin ones. Maybe the number of breakins from this in low, but if you have thousands of $$ woodworking gear in the space, I would find it a pleasant side-benefit.

Access control was part of it as was temperature control. And we're using a Chamberlain side mount opener that has a built in lock so it can't be forced up from the outside.

A just-pleasant benefit of heaver garage doors is they do not rattle/shake as much in heavy winds and the thin fiberglass.

Been working on this practice leg face all morning. I had to rebuild my leg indent jig since I was not happy with my first version. Now the Leg indent is cut and the ebony plug installed about where they will be on the actual legs. I wiped it with a wet rag to see the grain. Overall I am pretty happy with it.

I guess all I need now is the guts to do it to the real pieces. I have to sand and add the details before I glue anything up.

Just sent it! Bottom details on the legs are done.

Big stack of parts! All mortises cut, all the ebony plugs for the case are installed, everything that has been cut has been test fit, all parts sanded to 220. Next step is to glue up the two side panels then the back, top and bottom shelfs. I hope that I remember how it all goes back together after sanding off all my reference marks on the faces. After the case is glued up, I can focus on shelves and glass doors.

I was waiting for someone to pop that question

I made a simple shelf for my record cleaning supplies next to my turntable. Stained hemlock- took dark stain ok, rubbed twice with commercial BLO.

Will start the fancy living room shelving as soon as weather turns

Got home from work in time to glue up the two side panels. I used Tightbond III for a little longer working time. So far, everything went together smoothly, is square, and fitting correctly.

Sorry for so many posts. Basically using this thread as my build log in case I ever build another one.
