How about something like this? Whiteside are very nice, I use cheap ones off eBay.

No progress yesterday, drove to the beach for a nice walk, picnic, and some wine tasting with my wife.

Today I got all of the parts cut out. This is planned to be a shoe rack that will live next to a door.

The cherry will be the top. The two solid maple panels will be the sides. I am trying to decide if I will do anything to the sides. My son suggest a negative cutout of Lake Tahoe or a cherry Lake Tahoe panel glued to the sides. Kind of like the cutout on my shop cabinet. This is a gift for my sister. She has a place in South Lake Tahoe that we all stay at every summer.

Where do you source the metal part from? What's the diameter?

Do you do any epoxy? Might be cool to have a cut out of the lake filled with blue tinted epoxy

No epoxy for me. I really don’t like working with it. I will likely leave them solid.

I have never made any, but you can source the parts pretty cheap from Amazon. Search DIY bottle opener or bottle opener insert.

Large cutouts reduce overall strength of the piece. If you did epoxy (it can be a royal pain, I know from my limited experience) keeping it shallow (1/8 inch) would be best. But you could, if you have the control, route the outside-shape-edge into the wood for a subtle accent.
