i go there every year. my grandparents stay on their boat in avalon harbour. beautiful place. be sure to eat at mt. ada. and yes all of the hotels are pretty much crap but still very expensive just because it is on catalina. if you dont stay at mt. ada, there really isnt anything too fancy.

Those of you that suggest to only do a day trip as opposed to staying the night may I ask why?

hotels over there are expensive, and you can do most of the stuff in a day. unless youre gonna scuba dive or something like that. personally, id never go on the weekend too many damn people! i take my boat over for day drinking trips all the time, but week days only.

check out the mini golf course, they remodeled it, but it was a blast before!

edit: i guess im kinda jaded because i go all the time. if youve never been before theres problably a lot more stuff for you to do.

Ive been going there every year for like 10 years. I would check out the Inn at Mt. Ada and maybe Catalina Island Vacation rentals(expensive) or stay in long beach like he said^^ and take an early boat over. When you go you should hit up some of the tours, ride the sea-doos, and just explore the town. It sounds like you wont be there for too long so you would probably just want to explore the town. El Galleon is a fun place to eat as well as Antonios Pizza. Oh and get a soft serve ice cream from Pic Nic Fry, theyre awesome.

I went there two years ago.

Night time glass bottom boat tour, which was ok...

    jet ski, blast!

    Back island tour, good

    Sea Lion Day tour, good

Overall i had a blast. The island is pricy. It reminded me and the wife of disneyland pricing for food and our room was pretty basic...

Damn, i'm too late to warn you about sea port village inn. It was a nice motel if you like staying in roach motels. I was deeply disappointed in the room for the price. its a nice place just to visit for a day though, more then that it would get old and boring.

Villa Portofino has nice rooms, great location, and good Italian restaurant downstairs. Not sure about the 2-night minimum though.
