Custom, only one ever designed and built interiors, heavily welded frame, all sharp metal turned bed rack and a roof top I made for $75. Power pedal, injen intake system, cat delete, summit racing brake proportioning valve controlled on the fly, slightly adjusted or perhaps unrecognizable ECM, built in under bed storage, high clearance rear built with 1/4" on a 6011 1/8" rod at 120 amps, 360 degrees of led light, a PA and CB, on board air, on board propane (to cook food), on board fridge made from an old red bull fridge found on some guys man cave built into the storage cubby under the back seat, imported tranny and clutch from a good friend over in Europe to replace this aisin junk we get, combined 32 gallons fuel capacity, 18 5 gallons of water storage, built in gun locker under RTT, and all it cost was to hear the wife ramble on about upset neighbors at 2 in the morning every night since I bought that damn truck..
Forgive me if there's a thread already, I've looked around but to no avail, haven't seen what I'm dealing with. Alright, so my taco is dying without warning at highway speeds. Pointing towards fuel pump module so far. Symptoms include-
    -sputtering
-no power in any gear (manual obviously since I gotta pop the clutch)
    - faint gas smell
-trac off indicator will come on when it starts to die

Now, before any assumptions are made, I've already torn off the top of the engine and scoured it. Judicially cleaned the entire intake and throttle body, changing gaskets, went as far as checking valve lash, checked every connector and used wire dryer before reconnecting, did new injectors, soaked fuel rails in CLR, replaced fuel lines, replaced coils and plugs and checked gap going in to be sure, cleaned air filter (k&n), replaced the in tank sending unit, ohmed out the high pressure pump which oddly gave me no bad feed. After I restart truck, it's fine for 50 miles then goes back to stalling and or idling down until I pop start it again then it's fine. If I get nowhere by tomorrow, I'm gonna check the module along the frame. When I plugged in my laptop to get diagnostics, absolutely no codes popped up amd no live data supported evidence of negative fuel pressure. Cats are open, temps were all perfect, rpm ranged from 630 at idle to 660 and were very sporadic in any gear whether accelerating or decelerating. I'm open to insight cuz frankly I'm stumped. If no progress is made by the weekend I'm afraid I'm gonna have to drop a small block in her.

Wow, keep us informed. Very bizarre. It sounds like you know more about cars than I do so this could be way off but does the Tacoma have a tip or angle sensor that would kill the fuel in the event of a rollover? It sounds like something that could be like a motorcycle with a failing tip sensor. What about a crankshaft position sensor that is failing. Would that throw a cel though?

Was your fuel pump replaced under the recall?

I also have a 19 OR with 6 MT and my fuel pump exhibited failure symptoms. Luckily I wasn't driving on the highway and didn't lose all power. I did get the TRAC OFF warning. If that's what is happening to yours it's very strange that it didn't throw a code. If I remember right I had codes for low fuel rail pressure and cylinder misfire.

Anyways, I'd be getting that fuel pump replaced ASAP if it hasn't been done yet.

Interestingly enough, it does have an integrated sensor in the 4wd computer. It'll send a shutdown signal to the fuel pump module on the frame rail and kill it. Crankshaft p.s. would absolutely send a code if it were bad but seems good so far.

Congratulations, u win the golden ticket! 030085 and 030027 code was hiding under a different section it came as low fuel pressure and random cylinder misfire. Now to see if they'll replace it under the recall

I honestly never thought about that as a factor but I got her figured out. Ended up being the pump after all.

You did all of that work without checking into the fuel pump at all? Way to miss step one of the troubleshooting process.

So I ordered a new pump. Reluctantly I called the stealership to take advantage of the recall unfortunately they're backed up 3 months. So I ordered another denso for $687.00 that'll be here tomorrow. For some reason, they couldn't understand why I wouldn't wait 3 months. SMH. And then they laughed when I said I would put it in and not them. I responded with "would you let another man fuck your wife?" If the answer is not clear enough for you to comprehend then we ain't friends. I do my own work damnit. But I digress. I'm pretty sure I'm in the neighborhood of 100k but the Odometer stopped at 95,187 miles. I reckon that's a good life for the pump. If anybody has done any fuel upgrades I'd love to hear what y'all have.

I did check the pump on the electrical side. I didn't figure the mechanical side would have given out so yeah, kinda flawed there. But hey, now I got all new stuff

more is learned from failures than from successes. i'm sure he would have rather solved it quickly but he now has valuable first hand knowledge of the beast.
that said, it would be a good idea to browse titles of tsbs and recalls for future reference.

Agreed. In my honest opinion, I would recall that entire truck after having it for 4 years. When I hop into my hilux with 751,396 miles I sigh. Everything original and working. 3rd gens look sharp but holy hell are they problematic. Maybe I just got a bad one but I've done more problem solving than driving. I feel like a jeep owner

check the recall. iirc it is possible to get compensated for replacing pump yourself. and you had a failure so you'd qualify i think.

I'll bring the receipt tomorrow and ask em why wait 3 months? Less than 24 hours haha even if I can't get compensation it'll be worth the look on their faces when I show em

My wife tells people I'm so smart I'm an idiot and then contemplates why we're together in the first place. "If you hadn't put those mud tires on then your pump wouldn't have failed!" Charming lady.
