I might do a complete engine, transmission swap since truck has nearly 300k on motor and trans.

Hey Thanks for the reply, gearcruncher. That is definitely good information that you posted. I do believe that the sound that I am getting from my transmission which is intermittent metallic sound is due to the torque converter, but like your article or your other post have said, better to just replace the whole transmission. I am looking at just getting a used one 96-98 A340F and slapping it in myself. My only question is if I was to get a newer transmission and 3.4 engine, lets say from 02-04 Tacoma would I have to get the whole wire harness, ecu to make it work in my truck??

I suggest calling your local wrecking yard . They answer these questions every day and know exactly what fits and what year of transmission to use

I also think the 03-04 is electronically controlled do to the drive by wire throttle. The earlier ones with a throttle cable only had a kickdown cable going to the trans. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Does this one have a drive by wire on it? That long wire on the side of the tranny? I really hope it isn't because I need it for my 2000 and it doesn't use the wire

Looks like the actual shifter cable to me. I haven't actually pulled one of these from a Taco to know for sure though. The same tranny is used in lots of vehicles..

I looked around on Google images and it looks like all the transmissions pulled from 4Runners have this cable (this one is off a 4Runner). It has the normal shifting linkage it's just hard to see in the pic. I'm thinking it's like for the speed sensor or something?

Okay, so I am looking at getting a 1998 4Runner transmission out of a local junkyard instead of one out of a Tacoma because they are cheaper. The only concern would be whether they would match up. I heard that 96-98 versions are the same. The only difference on the door panel is (4Runners) A/TM A03A / A340F and (Tacomas) MINE A/TM B03A/ A340F. The only difference I noticed on the door panel is the A03A versus the B03A?? What does this mean??

Axel code correct? But would that make a difference with the transmission?

Just make sure the axle gear ratios are the same in the front and rear differentials so you don't screw up your transfer case
