Glad someone speaks the truth. I had one as a loaner for several weeks and was not impressed with the 4.0. The only difference is that the power comes in at a lower rpm but falls off once you get up to speed. Gas mileage wasn't much better stock compared to my taco on 285s.

Interior looks like it's from 2006, but it is roomier and cushier inside

having a 2014 T4R Limited (my current primary vehicle) and a 2016 TRD Sport DCab

    1. seats are better in the 4R
    2. backseat room is better in the 4R
    3. tech/overall features are slightly better in the Tacoma
    4. Tacoma does better job at hauling/pulling stuff than the 4R
    5. 4R is better at hauling people
    6. this is opinion : 4R is better for me in the winters up here with the full time 4WD system
    7. if you ever think you need more room in the future don't get a Tacoma, get a tundra

we had this very issue 2 yrs into a Tacoma where the backseat room was major issue. we ended up getting rid of it for a 2018 Tundra Crewmax Platinum.

edit : I refuse to let the dogs in my 4R since they are her hunting dogs. they can muddy up her truck

this was the only downside we had with the Tacoma, otherwise we would have kept it. having 2 full size GSP dogs for hunting with an occasional 3rd GSP, the backseat in the Tacoma was just to dam cramped with 3 dogs, hunting gear and 2 people in the front seats.

with the tundra we fit 3 dogs easy with room for them to rest, gear and 2 people up front with plenty of elbow room.

granted we have unique requirements so this may not apply to you

in case anyone says put the dogs in the bed :

    1. we don't put dogs in the bed due to either single/below zero temps during hunting (dogs suffer the same fate as the humans and vice versa)
    2. since its her truck primarily (shes the main hunter) she refuses to put a topper on the back, she hates the look of them)

My biggest gripe with the tacoma is the seating position and seat itself. Versus the 4runners seem to be better in this area. Good to know that the gas mileage on the 4runner is actually worse!
