And how difficult is it? Do you just unbolt bell housing and cover and separate from engine? Or do you have to remove transmission from the whole truck?

You have to remove from vehicle. They usually don't just break on their own though.
    You think it's frozen?

Not sure, just got a lot of metallic noise/ shutter coming from that area and my tranny fluid has been black burnt when I drained it the last two times, (both within the last month drained)

High odds you need a full rebuild. Minimum of soft pack, maybe some hard parts, depending on what's found.

    Mileage? Service history?

That's usually what happens. Tranny burns itself up and pukes into converter.

Yeah it's high mileage. 1996 Tacoma 280k. A340a transmission. I do have an awful lot of oil splattered all over the bottom end around the rear main seal. was just curious where the noise was coming from. Been planning on getting a used tranny from the junk yard. Been communicating with GEARCRUNCHER about my tranny, just thought it might be salvageable because it shifts fine for the most part, just the noise coming from that area.

Well, that is different than usual. I'd think it would be slipping.
