Anybody have a gremlin story?

So as you all know a gremlin is a lil bugger that makes a noise or does something on occasion and always hides when you try to find him or take your truck into the shop. I had one in my accord that would squeak for about 10 seconds about every 10th start up the dissapear. Started at 30k miles. It took 15k more miles before it became consistant enough to find while at the shop. It was the bearings in the belt tensioner going out.

So now onto the Taco. I posted a video and thread about a “chain” rattling sound and Bros thought it was the spare tire chain and gave ways to insulate or tuck it away. I did that but it still makes that noise. I took it to dealer this morning for my 5k check up and showed him video. Tech drove it and heard it. Checked brakes and wheel bearings and other possible cause and even drove another customers truck identical to mine expect more miles and has the exact same sound. At this point it doesnt appear mechanical but he wants me to bring it in during the week so the shop foreman of 45 years can do his magic to find it. Going over a slightly rough surface or bumps it sounds like change in cup holder or keys or a cheap thin chain. Not the end
Of the world and I’m loving my truck more everyday BUT it does bug me. Just want an answer if it’s a design flaw but no
Mechanic issue than meh, It’ll disappear when I get my exhaust put on.

What year? one of my older trucks (1997) had a "chain" noise that I chased for months... the culprit was the pressed on dust seal where the driveline meets the transmission.
It had come off, and become loose enough on the shaft to spin freely, which made the noise when accelerating or decelerating

We had a 1973 AMC Gremlin when I was a kid, I remember it used to die when it rained hard...

It will outrun an OE S/C Tacoma. On pavement anyway.

Gravel, bolts or washers in the muffler? How it would get there? No clue.

My mom had one of those, the back window cost $500 to replace. Back then that was a lot of money.

That was 10 years before that movie came out haha. My grandfather was an Air Force Mechanic in WWII. Everything was a gremlin to him so it was a natural. I grew up with my grandparents.

Ugh I knew the gremlin was gonna attract these comments

Nah man it’s not an engine issue it something loose. I this video I was in neutral going downhill to minimize engine noise.

This is my 2018 TRD DBLB so.... if anyone has the same truck drive it sometime when it’s quiet with the windows down and let of the gas and listen as you go over bumps or drive on rough surfaces and listen for a chain dangling like sound.

I will update after the other shop guy looks at it

Alright. So I had something like this with my truck. It started out just like that. Then it got more squeaky and less "dangly" I guess you could say. After it got worse I started thinking it was in the rear suspension. Finally it got worse enough to be very noticeable and I knew it had something to do with the suspension. Took it to the dealership. Told them and described it. They said Toyota had a work order for the double cabs for that issue. Not one for the access, cap which is what I had. Anyway, they took it back in the shop, lifted it up, put rags under the silencers for the leaf springs, and sat it back down. It stopped. So my issue, if it's the same as yours, were the silencers. Still waiting on the dealership to get the parts to replace mine. But, yeah. Go to the dealership and try asking about that. Maybe it's that.

But literally if it keeps making that, and never increases in volume, the only thing it can be, is the chain for the spare. Mine hangs low but doesn't hit.

I've started hearing this on my truck a few months ago. I thought it was the spare tire chain cause I took mine off once. Glad to know I'm not the only one!

Silencers for leaf springs? Never heard of such a thing. Well it’s a start. They heard it too. As long as it’s not a “mechanical” issue even though it’s a brand new truck it’s workable. Keep me posted if and when anyone gets this fixed and I’ll do the same. Thanks.

2018 Tacoma TRD off road, V6 auto. Back out of a parking space, put in drive and turn the wheel to the left to go down the aisle in the parking lot and I get a sound after the truck moves about 2 feet like I ran over a soda can. A light "crunch", very light and it lasts only a second. Sounds like it's coming from the drivers front wheel. Only does it under those conditions and not when the wheel is turned almost to it's left stop, or when I'm just traveling forward at the same slow speed and turn the wheel left, like when going into a parking space. Checking the source this weekend
