Islamorada, in the Florida Keys. That is THE most hostile environment on the planet. There is no escaping the salt that just hangs in the always extremely humid air. Just hangs there.

Just to give people a point of reference... if you look at things that you have in your home, like chrome faucets and toilet paper hangers. Yes, INSIDE your home. Even in the worst salty roads environment, those things last years. In the florida keys, give it 6 months and those chrome things INSIDE YOUR HOME will turn green.

This is an environment where STAINLESS STEEL rusts.

I don't find it hard to believe at all. Houses and buildings with metal parts and equipment rust away to nothing and they never see ocean water. The humid moist air carries the salt. When I spend a week at a time in hatteras, my truck is completely covered in salty nastiness and I never take it on the beach.

This is exactly what Im talking about.

I know this thread is a bit dated .. However,

I'm sitting in service at Mark Jacobson Toyota in Durham, NC waiting for them to get done with the 10k service.

    I asked the following :

    1. The frames are still prematurely rusting, what course of action does Toyota recommend ?
    2. What is the cost of undercoating with the dealers material and labor ?
    3. What is the cost of undercoating using my material and the dealerships undercoating (Ill probably look for a body shop to do it for me)

The service rep said that the 2015s arent rusting. When I check out, I'm going to show them this thread.

I have a 2015 Access Cab 4x4 V6. Never off road with it .. live in NC just like the OP. .. Well unless riding across my lawn is considered off roading.
There is some surface rust forming. Im not going to wait. im going to undercoat right away. This is NOT "normal". I'm old and decrepit 53 year old and have owned many trucks .. mostly Rams and none have shown any type of rust anywhere on the truck after only 9700 miles.

Once I get the dealerships answers. Ill post them up. But I am expecting that they will be intangible.

Im also having them look at the cluck/knock I have when I start the truck. Only happens when its not used for a day or two.

So I'm back at the house.

    Responses to my questions :
    1. "Toyota really doesn't recommend anything, but it would probably be a good idea to undercoat if you want to keep the truck for a long period of time." Not on service receipt.
    2. "$400 or more depending on what you want us to use". The service guy did mention that he spoke to the lead tech who suggested Krown. He also mentioned that they would use anything I wanted. But, if they needed to order it there would be an up charge. (no shit) Not on service receipt.
    3. "$200-300 if you provide the material." Listed on service receipt.

I showed the service guys the pics here. Had a little huddle around my laptop. No real response other than, "Wow thats a 2015 ?" I have started a poll "Rust and rust protection" asking for input on different materials being used. But as I said earlier, within a week my will be done.

My 2015 is now 11 months old and been through 1 Ontario winter with both regular salt and the calcium chloride (liquid road de-icer)

Mine was Krown'd 2 days after I picked up truck last august.

I was under the truck on the weekend doing the diff and transfer case drain and fills with Amsoil 75W90.

And i saw non of the rust you should in your photo's.

OP: you sure that's a 2015? Its a hell of a lot rustier than mine, which is 4 years older and lives in salt and snow.
Though it could just be the tar and oil I spray on it every year....

Looking at a 2015 TRD Sport. Does anyone know what the white putty-like substance is here?

Should I be concerned with the rust on these leaf springs? The 2015 Tacoma is from Utah.
