I just got back from a family vacation to Yellowstone and Grand Teton's, and saw a fair share of RTTs on vehicles. During our drives around, I was daydreaming about getting one for my truck to do a dream fishing trip through Montana and Wyoming (likely not going to happen for a long time due to work, family, and a guilty conscious. Also, I don't regularly play the lottery).

Then I got to thinking about how I camp here in NE (there were some long drives, and the audio book we had on was easy to ignore), and how a RTT doesn't make much sense for me. But my infatuation is still burning... so....

I usually head up to places where I camp at campgrounds and then drive to local fishing (northern NH and Maine). So I don't think a RTT makes sense for the type of camping I do. I'd have to set up and take down the RTT every day. While it's not very hard or time consuming*, it's an added step to get out and fish in the morning.

So I was wondering how people here in New England with RTTs use them, and if there's anyone that does a similar style of camping I do and don't mind the repeated setup and take down. I'd love to hear how your use your RTT.

    --------------------------------------
*There are a million and a half videos on youtube about setting up a RTT... but maybe less than a handful about taking it down and packing it up. and of those... most were time lapse and sped up. The one that was not, was an retired couple showing them packing it up, and describing how how it's a relative pain. Adding to the pain, if I'd do it every morning for a few days when I just want to get out and fish.

Love it so far. Still have a ground tent as well though. All about the right tool for the job. A rtt let's me be slightly more mobile than a pop up, yet still requires finding some space to set it up. I fish a lot, so setting up camp to make short travel to a river or lake makes my life a lot easier. Less of a mess than a GT as well. No water issues. Sets up in about 5 min.20170726_201342.jpg

Tons of people on the east coast with rtt's.

It's the most comfortable sleeping option for camping.

Not sure what you mean by "setting up camp to make short travel to a river or lake makes my life a lot easier". If you set up camp with the RTT, you're truck is kind of locked in, right? What am I missing?

I currently use a really comfortable cot in my groundtent, so my infatuation doesn't really consider comfort (limited upgrade). I can stand in my current GT and change, even put a chair and small table in there for when I want.

As an aside...Well dang... your OR is exactly what I envisioned while daydreaming for my inferno OR (I live near seacoast NH). Prinsu (installed), pro grill (wish list, plastidipped currently), kbvoodoo rack and RTT. If you put on one of those hybrid bumpers like the SSO, I'll start wondering if I'm in some kind of Inception scenario.

One more question: Anybody know of store(s) in New England that have any of these in stock for climbing over? I'm thinking either Tepui or CVT primarily. I don't mind traveling a little bit out of NH, but I wouldn't mind poking around a few to see the differences.

It's literally 10 minutes most to throw the pillows and sleeping bag in the cab, pull 7 rods, and zip it shut. With coffee in hand. I personally will trade being dry, having a larger foot print for sleeping, and less clean up for 10 minutes on most of my trips.

I camp probably 20-30 nights a year, but really the only reason I camp is to fish. Most of the camping I do is remote, so I'm away from my truck for extended periods of time and an RTT is useless. I need my home for the week to fit in my boat or even kayak. But if I had a RTT there are plenty of places to camp right on the water. It's just that you'll be in RV parks/campgrounds.

I'm cosigning the camping for fishing manifesto as well.

Thanks for all the info, I'll think more on it. I assume based on the silence that nobody knows any New England stores that sell RTTs to poke around in? REI doesn't have any in their MA stores (per their website). Bass Pro Shops says they ship directly from manufacturer, cabelas doesn't look like they have them either.

There's a guy in western mass that's a Tepui vendor. We got ours through REI. For us that was the best deal. Free shipping to the reading store, plus about $200 In rewards point for the REI store.

The Reading REI had a Skyline 3 there a couple of weeks ago. They have a garage sale this Saturday.

Lee, NH (work in Amesbury, MA). But I don't mind finding a reason to day trip somewhere (and also sneak in some fishing). I see you posted about the REI in Reading, I'll see about checking that out this weekend.

I also wouldn't mind meeting up to let you check my rig out. I live in Portsmouth and as mentioned earlier have three of the items you mentioned.

    RTT: Smittybilt 2783
    Rack: Voodoo
    Front Bumper: SSO

    So I am in Inception.

Thanks... I'll be in touch. None of you also ride DH at Highland, do you? There's someone with an inferno OR, voodoo rack and RTT I've seen there. Just taking a shot in the dark.
