I'm interested in getting a VW bug to mess around with as a new hobby. Anybody know of a good forum for classic VWs or does anybody have one?

Thanks for the pictures. The one I'm looking at is not near as nice as the ones you've got lol. Its a 74 and the owner says it is rust free. I'm sure there is rust in it somewhere though.

Samba definitely the place to go on the web. I used to restore pre-80 VWs of all types... Fun as hell as a hobby or a job. Basically go-carts with a few more bells and whistles. Stay away from super beetles... They tried to pack too much shit into an already small space and they are problem prone.

And yes, all the pre-80 VWs are way expensive now, and will only get more so.

One more thing... Best bug I ever had was a 71. Just the right combo of features without overloading the space. After that, they start to break in all sorts of stupid places. Before that, pretty spartan. But I'd take any year 60s or very early 70s VW over almost any other car that exists, if only for the ease and low cost of total bumper to bumper maintenance.

My first car is a 64 vw bug with a 71 bus motor in it.

I still have it at my mom's house. When I buy a house I will be doing some work on it, to make it as good as new.

No shit. I had a 59 Ghia convertible that I restored to near new, 90% of parts NOS. Sold it for a fraction of what I had into it. But, that's all classic cars, so wtf.

    NOS is so expensive.

Absolute gold, really, but so worth it if you have the passion and the money.

And the stories are fascinating... Some plant burned down but a maintenance guy grabbed all he could before it went down, some rich guy doing a Howard Hughes and buying up everything he could for no tangible reason, etc. Makes you feel very lucky when you snag that stuff.

I drove one once. It's haunted me since.

Definitely the most fun I've had in a car of that.. capability.

Keep in mind in 6'7" and 280 lbs. Working that clutch was like doing yoga.

But man.. it's an enchanting car.

Guy I know had a gasoline fueled heater in a 64... The heat worked, but whoa Nelly. Gots to be real careful.

My buddy had a 21 window bus that he did a half assed job restoring. I think it was a '59 but not sure. It looked really good at a distance but he didn't do a very good job. I about shit when he told me what he sold it for and this was 15 years ago.

Ya they are not big at all. I had a buddy in high school that made fun of my car all the time till he road in it. After that he told me it felt like he was riding in a tank. After that he never said a word.

Huh never found anything like that when I was trying to in prove my heater. I can imagine it could get stupid hot with that. I just added a fan to the ductwork work in the engine compartment.

It was a weird contraption. Forgot where he got it, but I congratulated him on his mega-heat and then turned around and said to myself "not an option". Seemed like an accident waiting to happen.
