it would be pretty easy to build a rear mount winch bumper... however i'm not sure there would still be enough room for your spare tire back there as well.

i built this one for mine but there would be NO way to fit any size spare under the truck at all....

Having a winch in the front is standard practice. How many rigs do you see winches in the back unless they're portable (receiver mount)?

Why would you have $1600+ worth (2 winches) on your vehicle?

I have 9+ years of offroading experience and I've never needed to have two winches. Nor I never wished I had one in the rear. If you use your noodle and with some help of the buddies you're wheeling with.....you can easily get yourself unstuck with ONE winch mounted on the front.

If the terrain you are wheeling in is THAT extreme...you shouldn't be there alone. Other vehicles in your group should have a front mounted winch whom can drag you out backwards.

Get yourself a snatch block, a tree saver, some tow straps. All of this - with a little geometry can yank yourself out backwards if you needed to (not a good idea to run the cable under the truck).

Take the $800+ that you would've spent on having 2 winches - and get yourself front & rear lockers.

i agree with pretty much everything stated above... however if he wishes to have a rear mounted winch then more power to him.. and i would also say there's no reason to spend $1600 on two winches now days.. alot of the smaller name manufactures make awesome winches now that can hang right with the big names and cost a fraction of the price.

having said that though there are situations where a rear winch can be a life saver... although they aren't all that common.

i built the winch mount into my rear bumper but still have yet to mount a winch....

I was thinking about the ARB one. But there are a few others that are similar that I was considering.

well he said that arb sells a front winch mount. i cant seem to find what he is talking about online. so i am guessing that he is just talking about the bumper, which costs like 800 dollars. which can hold a winch, atleast i think he is talking about the whole bumper, idk waiting to see what he says.

Well, last night I had to help my friend get his 2wd GMC back home from the river close to our houses. We failed... I was trying to pull him up a hill, with mud, and one of those crappy black and orage ropes. That snapped, so we had to go back home and get a heavy duty tow strap. We continued to try to pull it out... it just wasnt going to happen. But I was checking out the surroundings and if I would have had a rear winch bumper, We would have gotten the other truck out no problem. Granted we most likely would have been successful with just a front winch bumper, but it would have been a great opprotunity for a rear winch bumper. So I'm really wanting to get one becuase there have been a few times where it REALLY would have come in handy. It's one of those things where I'd rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

    Sheepdog,
slow down there son...you are being "Blinded" by this Rear winch vision;)...one or the other ,not both.....
How many Commercial recovery vehicles have both???
Janster TRIED to tell you ..1 winch and the proper "up-fit" equipment will do you more good than 2 winches...especially if it is too help another vehicle....;)
We were "Asked" to take a refresher every year and luckily the "tow-mans" assosiation had their "show" once a year....You can NEVER stop learning recovery tips, new toys or better angles...chain-vs- strap /cable-vs- synthetic winch lines....etc...

The days of "Just hooking and PULL" are being replaced by "wait-a-minute"...the $10-$50 parts are now hundreds if not thousands and one oop$ can be a "sideline" effect for a season....

DO NOT BE AFRAID to ask questions of the "winch vendors",local tow companies ,national clubs and most of all your LOCAL CLUB.....who uses this and why??..If I buy this ( ,,,) can it be serviced local?? How many straps, blocks and tree-savers do you carry??

Yes ,you are headed in the right direction BUT take your time and do the "up-fit" right the 1st time..THEN go out and have "FUN WITH IT":cool:

    S

Texas Chaos, that is a beautifully set up truck and I could wager when you go out "riding alone' you never have a worry....

If it were me, this is how I'd do a winch...especially on a lighter truck like yours...I'd have a receiver on the front, and one on the rear, and keep a portable winch with locking hitch pin in the bed. This way you won't have a ton of weight at the end of the truck all the time, and when you get stuck and need a rear one, you won't have to deal with trying to figure out how to run it under the truck. (if it were front mounted like most) You'll save $ on the bumper build that way too.

Myself for the places I go I would rather have a Winch in the back before the Front

Since I am most all the time alone.

If I need help I have sat as much as 8 hours

Two winches are not that expensive to me I already have 4

    improved toyota goodness.
i have had a few setups as far as winches go... the rear/front reciever is the worst setup I have ever tried and i will never even consider that option again.
on the 86 blazer that we use (a bunch of us co own it) we used a receiver mounted winch that could be swapped to the front or rear if needed... the biggest issue with this is that 9 out of 10 times we needed the winch the vehicle was in a position that the hitch was inacessable to use- being too close to an immobile object or against something/under water ect. and the winch could not be put into the receiver.
if left in the receiver the mount cut the approach/ departure angles down so far as to be unusable unless the ground was perfectly flat without ditches or rocks...
that said i do not ever recall using it on the front. but many many times it got used on the rear.

BUMPING - great topic and really great points.

I had many work trucks with front, rear and sometimes over the bed receiver hitches (to pull bear traps onto the truck) for a movable winch. I used the rear WAY more than the front because I was trying to get out of trouble not get past trouble. I have no desire to mount a heavy expensive winch permanently to the front, better to store it in the garage when not traveling and in the back when not needed. BUT receiver hitch winches sat so far out that they typically compromised approach and departure angle and might be un-installable when you need the winch (as @CStoy said above). So I want to avoid that.

My Work Shop Analogy: I have 3 bench grinders but only 1 grinder stand. I put ski bindings on the stand and put metal bars the shape of skiboots on each grinder. I can quickly change what grinder I am using based on what I need and store the rest. I want to apply this to winches but obviously ski binding are not an option until they make DIN 400 bindings.
So how could one make a moveable plate that quickly goes from the front bumper to the rear. I am eyeballing bumpers with easy and open access to the winch plate (i.e. Addicted Offroad's plate bumper).

But what quick release mechanism would hold the winch in place and still handle 8000lbs?
