My 07 4.0 4wd has the single click symptom which seems to fit the bad contacts scenario. All the writeups seem to be for first gen trucks. When i called all the parts stores, including the dealer, and several online sources, they all say a rebuild set is not available for the newer models and a reman/new starter is the only option.

Anyone done the repair and can point me to where they found the parts?

in the event that a replacement is the only option, the remanufactured options ($125) in my local stores are duralast, ultima, and rayloc. Any opinion? Thanks!

OP here, thanks to all of you for the tips. I was unable to find a local source here in San Diego but i did find an online source, pricey at $34 but thats like i guess.

However I don't know if i'll even need it because i'm stuck on the top bolt of the starter which just won't budge. Everything else went like a breeze. There is just no clearance from any angle to get leverage on that thing because the exhaust is right in the way. I'm gonna try again in a day or two when i get some time but i don't think its worth it to me to take the exhaust manifold down just for this as that will be a bit more of a project than i was expecting. Any tips from someone with a same setup 07 4wd 4.0 who did this fix without taking the exhaust off?

no direct advice on a taco....but my 4runner was also 'unpossible'

get some looong extensions and two u-joints and come at it from far away

on my 4runner I had to take the pass front wheel off, and squeeze up past the front axle assembly and over to the bolt with about 3 feet of various hardware and a deep socket. it came off though, even though logic dictated I had too much junk....I torqued all that crap up and cliK, bolt popped loose

Thanks to those who offered advice. I just wrote up a lengthy step by step for this but the stupid forum had timed me out while i writing it so when i hit post all my work was lost and i'm not spending another half hour redoing it. Suffice to say i got it done with a relatively easy method through the wheel well with a couple of tools. PM me if you want some help i'll be glad to. My 07 4.o 4wd could not be done with the methods described in other threads and the suggestions made in this thread.
