Anybody regret buying TRD Sport over an Off-Road

I didn’t regret it ever, because I never took it off road and I liked how the hood scoop looked

I have a '16 TRD Sport 4x4 with Premium and Tech. I love the truck. Swapping the shocks to 5100's made the world of difference in ride. Over the years I have lifted the truck, and swapped to a flat hood. It does great in mild off road situations. IF I ever plan on doing more serious off roading, I plan on regearing and adding lockers.

I'm not a fan of the black render flairs or chrome rear bumper caps. I like the body colored accents better.

I have a 2nd gen but i think this still applies, not knowing all the new features on the third gen. I bought an off road because i thought i would use the locker more being in snow and the occasional backwoods road, no heavy off roading. In reality i have never used it other than making sure it works. There is a very small speed limit with it, and it truly is for helping you get out of trouble. I havent been in a situation where regular 4wd didnt get me out.
Where the offroad shines for me is using A-trac. I plow a steep drive and the traction i gain pushing up hill is noticeable. Without plowing, i dont need the a-trac.

Was in a slightly similar situation a few months ago, went with a Sport because that was quickest availability with options/color I wanted. No regrets and love the truck... The Sport suspension handles great on-road which is where I am 99% of the time. If/when I ever go off road or need additional traction I'm quite sure 4x4 + good tires will take care of me more often than not. Also don't listen to the haters... there's a reason you can pretty easily trade a Sport hood here + receive extra cash to someone with an OR ;)

lmmfao...fuck no...scoop is not fake it adds a lot of character to what would be a loooong flat hood...its there for looks only and it works just fine for that

I've had several offers from BRM Off Road owners to swap my BRM Sport (with Skewp) hood; I'm personally inclined to take one of them up on their offer, however, both my wife and son are solidly against me doing the swap.

It sounds like you’ll be okay with a Sport.. the main seller for me on my OR was the locker, and I knew I was going to heavily modify it, and with heavy modifications the black flares look better imo. If kept all stock, the color match looks better.. but I don’t keep anything stock. I would’ve been settling for a Sport, so I waited.

Bring back manual mirrors and cassette decks. The big round KC lights with the yellow covers too. LED lightbars don't look nearly as cool.

Considering how ungodly expensive everything is right now I would say test drive all sorts of cars, trucks and SUVs. Getting tunnel vision isn't good imho.

Summing up the five pages of this thread, the key difference between these two models are their road manners; if someone wants to spend 99% of their time on paved roads, then the TRD Sport is a no-brainer; conversely, if one is planning on say (and this is just a SWAG guess), 15% or more of their time on trails and such, it is a no-brainer to get the TRD Off Road. For those who'll be spending between 2% and 14% of their time on trails, it is a judgement call as which flavor to get.

I think the sport hood looks nice. Face it, if the truck didnt look good we be driving a butt ugly Ranger or something else right. We havent been knocked off our feet by the current build quality of Tacomas, or awesome motor and transmission. It looks damn awesome, wheels pretty good and is fun to drive usually. So dont act like you dont care and are some purists.

That being said, the hood gets in the way for me all the time when going off road. Not just steep inclines and descents, just a driveway will have you blinded. Its irritating and I have thought of getting a hood without the scoop.

But as mentioned before, the biggest regret is not getting a long bed. The short bed is good for carrying a few sacks of potatoes and thats about it. Just so small. Size does matter, on a truck bed.

The added wheeling functions of the OR would be cool, but I havent missed them. But Ive of the mind, less stuff to fail.

My use case is pretty much the same as yours and I don't regret buying a Sport.

TBH though, for me transmission choice in a DC was tops.... without paying the Pro premium, that is.

Assuming they're the same price still, the Off Road has functional upgrades while the Sport is just a glorified appearance package for the SR5.

The electronic brake booster in the OR is leaps and bounds better and something you'll use every day.

What exactly is the electric brake booster and what doers it do? Honestly asking simply to learn.

    TIA

If you want just a rear locker, try to get the trail edition. Many people don't need or will ever use crawl control or MTS, and majority of people will swap out the suspension.

The dealership that I'm on a waitlist with, recently called to let me know that they were allocated a 23 DCLB TRD OR. I put my name on it but I would have put my name on a SR5 or TRD Sport if that had been allocated first, as long as it was a DCLB. The prices are similar if you want a barebones trim w/o any packages.

A glorified appearance package? What I find interesting is I've seen a lot of SR5 owners taking a dump on folks who opted for a TRD Sport; funny thing, I just looked and the base price of my TRD Sport is a hair lower than an otherwise identically configured SR5; why would I pay more for an SR5 and get stuck with an automatic transmission?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the Trail Edition cost a fair bit more than a TRD Off Road?

Instead of using the typical large diaphragm vacuum booster that you see behind our brake master cylinder, the ORs / Pros have an electronic booster that combines the master cylinder and ABS unit. Contrary, you do not 'use' it every day. It has the capability to double the line pressures when a wheel slips, thus A-TRAC. That said, the vacuum booster provides more than enough braking power and still provides excellent TRAC capability with wheels off the ground.

The only significant difference that I have ever found is that the ORs / Pros can provide wheel off the ground forward motion near idle. The vacuum boosted Tacos need revs higher than idle, which can add some challenge when being careful near obstacles.

Serious splitting of hairs in these kind of threads.

SR, SR5, Sport, Limited vacuum booster, just like most other vehicles on the planet, plus the ABS unit on the right side of the engine bay:
    upload_2022-11-1_8-6-7.jpg

OR / Pro electrically boosted system that very few vehicles have. Common on some of the Lexus SUVs:
