Thats why 2wd pickups dont hold as much value as 4wd. Here in northeast pretty much nobody in right mind would buy 2wd pickup. People from here often go south to purchase used trucks since thye usually less rusted but again they will go get 4wd's not 2wd. So there is always demand for 4wd trucks even if they old (even if they rusted to crap) because on the end even 16 years old truck can be used for snowplowing around the yard.
Plus plenty people ditch their 2wd's and trade them for 4x4

I disagree, with 4x4 on ice you get a lot more traction than with 2wd. I pulled a volvo 1/4 mile up an icy hill on the way to work this morning. The 2wd vehicles couldn't make it up but myself, a guy in a wrangler, and a guy in an F250 4x4 all made it up fine. We all helped the 2wd people get to the top. I was slipping a little bit but I still made it up w/ a 3,000+ lb car in tow behind me on my tow strap.

I drove most of the way to work in 2wd this morning but had to use 4x4 to decend and ascend some pretty steep hills I encounter in my commute.

Again like i said before having 4x4 doesn't mean you are invincilble. I just like the feeling of know I can get home and drive around during a snowpocalypse while everyone else is stuck.

It is funny how people respond to threads.
The title was do regret. I see several response no because I bought a 4WD.
Then you don't qualify. Start a thread that says I am happy I bought a 4wd Taco.
    Thread whores.
    just my observation.

Somebody have a case of moondays :D
But to stay on topic. Best way to avoid regrets is to do homework before buying.
Simply sit down with piece of paper, pencil and a beer and write down what you will be doing with the vehicle. Then all the things you think you will need on the truck to support it.

Yes. It snowed twice in a month in TN and have to wait for the wife's dad to bring stuff. Not cool.

I am glad to live somewhere where 4X4s are not needed and in fact are harder to sell used than 2X4 for the premium prices they demand.

That said, When I lived in Nevada 2X4s were worth far less and hard to sell and I had a 4X4 but I actually went off roading with it. I spent hours ridding the truck of "Arizona pinstripping" but enjoyed the off road experience. definitely not a "street queen" like my latest truck LOL.

2X4s are a waste of money on a truck IMO if one lives where there is snow. Trade in is rough as well. I personally would not buy a 2X4 if I lived in snow country. Like having a black car in Las Vegas. The addition of front wheel drives with the additional weight over them are a necessary evil if one is going to own a truck with a light weight bed and drive in snow. Ice is trecherous for any all wheel drive vehicle. been that done that. Just 4 wheels spinning

What I found humorous is without fail the few vehicles I routinely saw in the ditches on the side of snowy roads when driving in snow states were 4X4s. People who own them believe they are on dry roads in the snow because they have a 4X4. Overconfidence.

Here on the South Carolina coast 4X4s are not needed at all, and there is no where to actually enjoy them for safety or sport while paying higher insurance and maintenance costs. A Ford dealership had a used one I was interested in until I saw it was a 4X4. Used to be to have a nice looking truck you had to buy a 4X4. Not so anymore with the Pre Runner SR5 with TRD packs.

Locking rear Diff will get me out of most issues I can think of getting in.

Completely agree with this. If I lived up north I would go south to buy a lower value 4X4. Most people don't want a 4x4 down here. No need for one to pull a boat in and out of the water. higher truck and Locking rear is good enough.

ANY truck down here is always in demand. Especially less expensive 2WD Lifted 6 cyl trucks like Pre Runners with TRD packs. If you do buy a 4X4 you will likely get your money back as well anywhere but it will take longer to sell.

I'm seriously considering trading up later this year. I've needed a double cab more than I need 4WD, but you bet I'll get 4WD. PreRunners are a hot item around here. All the left over '10's at the lot were 4x4's last summer albeit most non-popular pkgs(non-sr5, nontrd, red, 4cyl, reg. cab).

I had to trade in my LOVE (pics below) because it didnt have 4wd. I drive about 400 miles a week and 2 snow storms in 2009 caused me to lose over 4 days of work. Not good...

I now have an extended cab 4x4 that is quickly becoming apart of me. Especially after the last 3 weeks here in Jersey. We have rec'd almost 2' of snow total!!!

This is an exceptionally important question, IMO.

I suspect a 2009+ base 2wd Taco (TRAC/ALSD, VLC) would meet my needs. My situation would be more of a corrective on the "not much weight on the driving wheels" squirelliness that is the nature of the 2wd truck. I'm no expert or rally driver but I am decent at the basics like keeping momentum, picking a reasonable line, looking ahead, gentle control inputs, and generally not being That Moron in a ditch or causing a pileup.

    My wishlist:

    * less open-diff style spinning when one wheel is in gravel, mud, wet paint stripe, etc.
    * the very occasional snow day in Texas
    * no wheeling, beaches, racing, or aggressive driving, although dinky stuff like jaunts down a fire road or graded dirt path wouldn't be out of the question. I've done ok in those situations with plain open-diff 2wd before.

I've had two compact 2wd pickups before (Mazda B2000-series, one standard cab and one access cab) and didn't wreck or get them stuck. Kept sandbags or firewood in the bed during cold weather. As a much younger (and wilder) man I had a stock Jeep CJ-5 and did all kinds of irresponsible things but rarely got it wedged. I was one of those who drove in 2wd until 4wd was needed because I wanted to know where the edge of 2wd really was, where the limits of my abilities were. I am much calmer nowadays.

Based on my reading here at TW I am thinking I could also be happy with an older base Taco with a truetrac LSD installed. Any thoughts on that scenario?

I am open to comments/advice/haiku. In the research stages now and will start hunting craigslist/autotrader when I get my wants/needs figured out.

Living in Georgia, I am in the same situation. And my lifestyle does not put me in situations where I'm playing in the dirt or sand. I've had a RWD 4Runner for the last 12 years and have only needed 4WD on 5 occasions. These were all snow/ice situations up North and once down south (last week in Atlanta). I would imagine the next 12 years would be similar, which is why I dont want the maintenance/insurance/weight/fuel economy of 4WD.

However, I will buy a 4WD if I need it. But with the newer features and traction control of modern trucks ... I'm hoping I don't need it! What are your thoughts?

Will Auto LSD and TRAC be suitable for occasional snow? Do the 2WD Tacomas have locking rear Diff?

We get snow pretty consistently throughout the winter where I live, and so far I have had absolutely no issues getting around in my 5 lugger. Snow was the one and only reason that I was worried about buying a 2wd truck in the North East. Turns out, the auto-LSD and traction control features work very well. I just toss 3 sand bags in the bed if I think it's going to snow, and I'm off. No worries here.

I got stuck one time with 2wheel drive about 30 years ago...while hunting. I had to walk out of the lease about 10 miles. Ever since then I have owned NOTHING but 4x4. If you need it once and do not have it, you will know what I mean.

I know exactly what you mean, and that's why I'm seriously considering 4WD. I've needed it about 5 times in the last 10 years. I'm just hestiant to purchase 4WD just for those few times. But with Auto LSD, TRAC, and some of the new saftey features - I'm hoping I could go another 10 years without 4WD.

Perhaps a 2WD TRD Sport would suit my needs.
