Anybody regret not buying a 4X4?

I'm 48 years old and have had one 4x2 truck in my life. I drove it for about 9,000 miles and traded it in. 4x4 is the only way to go. Initial cost is not that much more and resale will always be there for the 4x4. There are just too many times that it was really nice to have. We even drove one out of the trails one time after snapping a rear drive shaft. We probably drove 20 miles. There was no cell phone coverage and nobody anywhere around. That would have been one biatch of a walk. Front wheel drive only FTW!

And, like I tell everyone who says it doesn't help you stop any faster on snow or ice, I just tell them they are absolutely right. However, it sure does make driving out of a ditch a lot easier if you do end up in one.

Yeah Yeah yeah Blah blah...I know what you think about me..and I am supposed to care? Sorry man. You are not that relevant. "Sticks and stones" and all that jazz..

I wear seat belts...indeed..Its the law. Would I wear them otherwise. Maybe not. My choice.

Show me the "high statistical" chance..You can easily find the stats I indicated...Since when is .5% a high statistical event? or even 2% if I decide to speed, ride legally drunk, hotdog etc.... Where is that chance?

If there was a "high statistical chance" of having a get off in the next 10 years, I would sell the bike tomorrow... There simply isnlt and the REAL numbers and statistics prove it, Staes are reversing their helmet laws..Not exactly something you do when you are keeping "vegetable gardens" watered,,,,
I am prepared. I am prepared for a nice ride in the park in shorts a T a ballcap and yes my Velcro sneaks...(because loose laces wrapping around the gear shift suck on on a bike) and I don't give a flying f%%K what total strangers think.

Only once did I wish I had a 4x4. As I was digging my truck out of the snow in Yosemite, a guy climbs in a bone stock Ford F150 4x4 with street tires and drives out of the same crap I'm shoveling.

Unfortunately only fatalities are recorded... at least from what I've found. That of course doesn't include serious and moderately serious injuries... and of course only those types are crashes are reported.

but whatever I'm done arguing with you...

They are indeed... For those Home Depot runs and that pesky yard waste and those fun trips to Costco and lets not forget the Mall.... I don't expect I will be needing to forage through the woods or far off the beaten path places crawling over rocks through the snow for food and such anytime soon. And no worries about car doors or poles and objects marring the dull factory paint job on the Tupperware.

Hell the Locker is a waste for me but it came with the truck......meh someone someday will use it again or for the first time, I only used it once..accidentally.

No, I haven't. But, I can guarantee you that 4wd, if similarly equipped, will go places a 2wd will not, period! Personally, I won't run anything but mud tires on my truck. I will admit I can go a lot of places in 2wd that require others to be in 4wd. However, I would personally never own another 2wd truck. I have been amazed what you can do in 4wd versus 2wd.

I bought the Tacoma for my daughter. She's in college and wanted a 4wd for the snow. It's a very nice truck. I bought it for the Toyota reliability. I put some better all-terrain tires on it, but not mudders. I actually told her not to let the boys talk her into taking it off-road. My wife has a 2005 4Runner that has been flawless. Myself, I prefer something a little bigger.

For 2wd, I prefer something a little faster.

ALL motor vehicle incidents that require a hospital stay and some not are recorded officially. 100,000-/+ injurious get offs are documented every year requiring a hospital visit. Where do you think they get those 38% effective helmet statistics from? Only the dead? Did you say you had a Masters Degree? From HERE Are you serious? Every motor vehicle injury event is recorded and entered in a database along with mitigating factors.

how would they even know how effective helmets are if they didn't count the survivors?

    Just wow.........

Yea, you're right. Well would it make sense to throw some decent all terrain tires on the back? I have to go offroad from time to time and I don't want to deal with digging myself out.

I have owned 2wd trucks all my life (I am now 50). My latest, a 2011 Taco 4x4 AC, is my first 4wd vehicle. Over the years, I found myself "needing" 4wd every once in a while - like during a bad snow storm, when loading a boat on a slippery ramp, or even when I had to drive around on the lawn (steep hillside) when the grass was wet. I got by with having a spare set of rear wheels with studded snow tires mounted on them, and I got used to swapping them over every fall.
I really enjoy having 4wd now, but I have not had to use it very much so far. This fall, I will not miss having to swap wheels, though.
Also, it is kind of funny, but I have had all kinds of 2wd small trucks, and some were definately much better in slippery conditions than others. My 2000 Taco 2wd was one of the great ones, along with my '91 S-10. My 2001 Dakota "Sport" was the worst. That thing was terrible on anything but dry pavement, and I do not know why - maybe because it was very nose heavy.

    Just give it some time
I didn't intend to get a Tacoma when I went vehicle shopping with the lady, and wound up on a diff dealer's used car lot. However, the Taco stood proud, the deal was sound, the truck was solid, and it became mine.

However, in that process, I didn't get to pick the features I wanted. If I had the choice, I'd go with 4x4. Not that I do a lot (or any) off-roading, nor do I have to feasibly worry about snow, but it'd have been nice to have that option.

Bought a new 2001 Taco Double Cab TRD 4x2 while living in CA, and couldn't justify the NEED for a 4x4. Moved to York, PA in 2004, and with the snowy/icy winters, a 4x4 would have been nice. In 2006 my wife bought a Honda Pilot (AWD) and I quickly discovered the advantages of having a 4x4 in the winter. Holy cow what a difference. Needless to say, my dealer offered a great price, awesome interest, and an awesome trade-in value (2001 Tacoma) for a new 2010 Tacoma Double Cab TRD Off Road 4x4. Although we only had minimal snow last winter, it showed its capabilities quite nicely.

    Thanks Toyota!

It's not new, it's not Mexico
I don't regret buying a 4X2, but I have no interest in off roading. The one time it snowed this year my 4X2 got me to where the police had the highway closed and back home. I know there are lots of situations where a 4X4 is mandatory, but I rarely get in to them and can't justify the extra $10K.
