I think most come with 4.10, Just wondering if someone is running lower gears, & how it's worked out? Mine with the 2.7, auto., 4X4 & 4.10 gears really struggles

Thanks, all I've done is go up to a 31.6 tire, 1" taller than stock, & no other changes. My normal driving is around 60 mph. @ appx. 1800 rpm. At that low rpm. my Taco seems to be straining constantly, just to keep going. Any sight of hill & it unlocks converter & shifts down to 3rd. On the interstate, running 75 mph. & up around 2250 rpm. it does a lot better. I've been driving in 3rd, for appx. last 2K mi. and is a lot more comfortable to drive, never shifts on hills & just kind'f cruises along with no strain. 60 mph. is appx. 2650 rpm, a little higher than I would like, but none of the straining & shifting all the time. I've always kept up with my gas mi. & haven't seen any change. looking at 4.88's and that should put it at appx. 2150 rpm. @ 60 mph. in hi gear. I want to, just hard to pull the trigger. Hoping for input from someone that may have been there & done that.

Just run her in 3rd if its more happy there with your setup. This will still give you the option to cruise at higher speeds in OD without being really spinning fast.

Mid Tn. elevation 500' to 1000', not the problem. It just seems the 2.7 has very little power @ low (1800) rpm., at Interstate speed, 2200 rpm. it does much better. I realize it's just a decision. Seems I can run what I've got, 2600 rpm. in 3rd. @ 60 mph., appx. 90% of my driving, & on interstate 2200 rpm. in Hi, my other 10% of the time, or change the gears & run in Hi @ appx. 2200 rpm. @ 60 mph., 90% of my driving, then the other 10% of interstate driving, run up to 2600 rpm. Shoot, if I could do it over, I'd probably have got a 5 spd. A five speed with the 4.10 is geared almost exactly like an auto. with a 4.56. It would have to be much better than what I have now.

Well with mine im doing 70 around 2800 rpms with roughly 33's. I would either go 4.88 or nothing its. Not worth the cost to go to 4.56 from 4.10.

4.88’s here. 4cyl 5speed, heavily modified, 33” tires. Much better drivability on the highway being able to maintain 5th gear most of the time again and only 300~ rpm higher than stock gears and tires vs the current setup. Mpg also increased with the 4.88’s vs trying to turn the 33’s with stock gears
