220# a “huge” improvement?:) Mine is about the same, 990 I believe. Like I said, 4 dudes and a cooler is 1200#.

You know, Toyota did all this talk about new TGNA-F frame blah blah blah and payload only improved by 200# pounds. IMHO it’s a complete joke.

MPGs suck. Wheelbase is longer, making it worse off-road. (3rd gens are already too long for some obstacles). Ground clearance hasn’t changed. Styling is a bit too much. Better torque yes but with questionable reliability. Price is just insane.

Personally, I feel like 4G is a huge let down. Although, I would love to test drive a MT 4G just for shits.

Well I mean it’s an entire extra dude you can take with you. “Officially” not like a real dude can fit in the back of a taco comfortably.
    +20%

My main issue with the 4th gen is price. It went up like on any other Toyota product that has recently been refreshed by 20%… which is insane. A sequoia for ex costs as much as defender. Which is lunacy

And there is no cheap sub $30,000 option. Toyota has now stated that if you want a cheap vehicle, it can’t be a truck anymore. It has to be something like a Corolla.

Up until the last few years, every manufacturer had at least one or two cheap trucks you could squeak by for less than $30,000.

And let’s not talk about the deevaluation of the American peso because you can still remove content and scrape under 30k.

Yeah… the price. I’m so glad I’ve got low km and my truck is paid off. I feel sorry for folks that are buying new vehicles nowdays.

I can’t believe I am saying this, but all factors considered and a year of grinding my teeth over 4G manual transmissions, I may actually be glad I got the 3G. After I somehow got $2k off my truck in a hot market (with no dealer BS either), the 4G would be like $10k more. Better? Probably. $10k better? Ehhhhh…

I'm confident if payload was 2,200 lbs, 30 mpg, 350HP+/400LB-FT, increased ground clearance, and a MSRP of $35,000 and ya'll would still cry about something.

My GMC Sierra 2500HD Duramax has a 3559 lb payload, I have a 2020 4R TRD ORP W/KDSS, I need the 2500 to pull my big Airstream.
I really can't say anything bad about the GMC, truck hasn't given me any trouble whatsoever and the Duramax diesel with Allison transmission is awesome, big Crew Cab truck gets over 22mpg on the highway.
I hook up Airstream, put two Hobie Kayak's on the Yakima Truck bed rack and two mountain bikes underneath Kayaks and I'm all set. Truck doesn't strain at all with over 900 foot lbs torque.
It'll go down the highway 80mph like this with confidence, I usually set cruise control between 70-75. Going up big long mountain pass truck doesn't even downshift. Toyota doesn't build a truck that suits my towing needs. I really like my 4R though, it's my daily driver. Only drawback with the 2500 is you can't really four wheel with a truck like this, it's too big and heavy, weighs close to 8K lbs. and has the turning radius of a school bus.

The Tacoma is not a big hauling truck. It's a midsized "adventure" market truck or a light duty hauling truck. If you want a big cab to haul all your dudes, get a bigger truck. I would also say putting 4 300# dudes in the tacoma cab does not sound like a fun trip regardless. But to each their own.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, just saying that if the truck doesn't meet your needs shop for something that does. I think they designed the truck for a specific demographic of overland/adventure type (in reality or imagination) of person. As for the price, comparing old model prices to new shows something like a ~10% increase after inflation adjustments as well as better creature comforts. Again, if that isn't your thing, go with something else.

If they play the Tacoma out like they did the Tundra then there will not be any with close to the max claimed payload. Tundra's is close to 2,000lbs and the most anyone has posted on the tundra forum is under 1,650 I think.

However, a lot of people are finding out they have a bit more than their sticker claims once they take it to official CAT scales. Usually an extra 100-125lbs of payload or so. Still not close to advertised online specs, but better than the door jamb sticker.

    According to Toyota...

"Maximum towing capacity for Tacoma is rated at 6,500 lbs. on SR5 i-FORCE and TRD PreRunner XtraCab grades, and maximum payload increases to 1,709 lbs. on TRD Off-Road."

I absolutely love my Tacoma and have no intentions of getting anything else. It does everything I ask it too without a sweat. If the rear legroom was like 8” bigger, my taco would be a perfect truck for me. I’m keeping my truck for another 20 years at least.

If you read my post, it said “4 dudes and a cooler”. 4 x 200 dudes is 800, plus a cooler, some personal items and you are at max payload with all this fancy talk about all new TGNA F frame. Pathetic in my books.

I was just saying that Toyota was promising all these “huge improvements” in the 4G and quite frankly I don’t really see any. More power, sure. Well and sway bar disconnect. That is it.

Well, folks in NA are not getting smaller! :)

Don't forget multi-link rear suspension, better seating position, better transmission, rear disc brakes, standard LED headlights.

    Meh.

I fit like a glove in my truck. Zero complaints even driving for 10.5 hours straight.

Multi link rear? Zero interest to me. My truck rides a truck and I love it.

Better transmission? I love my MT, I also drove two 2019 OR ATs and found them very pleasant, don’t understand all these “TW” complaints.

Rear disc brakes? Still almost same payload as 3G and my truck stops just fine. Plus drums are way less maintenance. I don’t get this obsession with rear disc brakes when drums have been working just great on Tacomas.

LED lights? Um sure. I can see just fine with my headlights :)

So yeah, 4G is a huge disappointment to me.

My son-in-law does kitchen renovations for rich people living out in the California desert. He has an F350 four-door supercrew with the long bed. The thing is like a battleship, but it fits him, two other fat dudes, and a bunch of crap in the cab, and then even more crap in the bed. It also has a topper and the obligatory rack so it’s a menace to drive-throughs.

He drove it up to visit us here in the San Francisco Bay area and it wouldn’t even fit in the street in front of our house, I had to move my Land Cruiser so he could park it in the driveway, and then it didn’t move for two weeks while they were here because that thing would stick out from parking spots by at least one compact car length.

He couldn’t even drive it to the airport when they went on vacation vacation because it’s too tall and too long to fit in most California parking garages.

You can make trucks bigger, but there are still places where you can’t have too big of a truck and you have to get creative with your space.

There was a reason why a lot of companies here in California like to use the SR Tacoma access cab because it fits just about everywhere.

    Um?

Then I would say: “wow! That’s a huge improvement Toyota, well done!”. Something like that.

Im not complaining about anything. I have zero intentions in getting STI with a box. Im just stating my opinion that there is very little improvement in most important areas, that’s all.
