I've had dash mats in the past, but this time, I tinted my front windshield on my Taco. Helps minimize the UV coming in on the dash. I put on my front reflective shades whenever I'm parked in the sun. This also helps keep UV from hitting my dash.

Live in Hawaii. Have never had a dash mat in any of my vehicles and none of the dash ever cracked. My B2300 was parked outside for 15 years.

I don't yet have a dash mat, but I will get one in the not too distant future.

I had one on my 2001 Dodge Cummins almost from new. In the intense northern California valley summer heat, even when using a reflective windshield sun screen, and leaving all my windows lowered 3" in the summer, my dash still cracked after about 12 years under the dash mat. But I'm still going to get one for my Tacoma.

I guess I have always had a dash cover on every one of my cars so didnt see if it made a difference or not. I am sure it did. Other dashes I did see, were pretty weathered though, so without some type of conditioner, it will eventually get dull or cracked. We were going to try not to purchase a dash cover for my wifes NX by having the front window tinted, but the tint guy scratched the windshield so now I wont even attempt trying to tint another one of our windshields. I agree they are not for everybody, but they do have new designs with patterns and stuff that looked pretty good on her car.

Some pretty good replies. If my truck was going to be garaged everyday I probably wouldn't worry about it. But since my garage already has 4 other vehicles, it's going to have to sit out. ANY extra protection is good in my opinion. I think dark grey is the way to go.

Dash plastics have UV protectors in them. They won't crack, and only slightly fade over long (years) of direct sun exposure. Not to mention the windshield has uv blocker as well. There really isn't a need for these in most vehicles anymore. Also sunscreens look better in the window and can be removed a lot easier. I'd go that route before a dash mat for sun protection

Tell that to Nissan... their dashboards are literally melting.

Pretty sure those aren't hard plastic, they are a softer material that can crack. Most of them crack because people put armor all or other substances on them. Only suppose to clean off with a damp rag. Only way a hard plastic dash should crack is in a accident or someone prying at it or something similar

The 4runner has the same material dash as my tacoma. It has never had armor all on it at all. I'm waiting to see if in a few years they do the same thing with the tacoma's.

I'll tell you what...that shiny dash totally messes up my dash cam footage from its reflection into the camera day and night! I thought my damn windshield was dirty all the time until I finally figured out that all that reflecting stuff in my playback was the reflection of the shiny dash texture! I threw up a black t-shirt on the dash, and the problem went away. I'm ordering one of these:
