I've been working in the mortgage industry for 3 years now, processing loans. I have no interest in this job, whatsoever, other than the money I make for mods. There's literally no room for expansion here, and it's a glass-ceiling sort of job.

I recently got an opportunity to be hired at a local (rather popular) OC Toyota dealership. I've had a few sales jobs in the past, and I've proven worthy as a salesman. Never sold cars, but I'm pretty knowledgeable when it comes to most of the stuff new car buyers are looking for, and then some. I've rebuilt motors, installed all my own aftermarket parts, and I even built a Shelby Cobra kit car with dad in high school. I'm interested in all kinds of cars, and I'm always looking to learn more.

I currently make about $2000 a month...which is barely keeping me alive. I'm very interested to possibly work in a field in which I'm passionate about, and I can see myself excelling in. My question is, in your honest and professional opinion, do you think there is good money to be made in car sales, and is it worth it to make the switch from hourly compensation to commission based?

This is a rather small Toyota dealership as far as real estate, but they have auxiliary lots with plenty of inventory. From the amount of license plate frames I see on the road, they get quite a bit of traffic through there.

    Any input is appreciated!

Most cars sales jobs are commission only. My mom did it once for 2 weeks and made nothing. Not a dime.

You can make a really good living as a car salesman, some of the guys at my place do but be prepared for 16 hr days, no free weekends, no holidays off and 90% of the time you're at work you're shooting the shit waiting for a customer to arrive. Also have at least 2 months expense reserved before leaving your current job while you learn the ropes cause i will assure you that your 1st paycheck as a sales guy will make you cry

I figured I would do that to make sure my expenses are covered.

I was checking out CarMax today, and it seems like a viable option. They get paid a set commission on each vehicle, and usually have more customers these days. Heck, I traded in my VW and bought my Tacoma from them!
