so my parents are getting me the roof rack for my birthday. well they wont let me install it but went to toyota and toyota said that they normally dont do it but are for some reason this time.

they said the reason they normally dont is because they have to take off the headliner and drill into the roof to get it on. what i was wondering was i remember on here reading that there is already pre-drilled holes in it. so is the dealership just giving my parents BS because they dont know or did they change something in the roof with the 11 models?

    Thanks

No idea, but this is something I'll be researching as well, I plan to get the OEM roof rack this year.

Not sure why the dealership wouldn't put the OEM roof rack on though....

A monkey could install it.......And I did. very very easy. The only pointers I would give is to use never seize on the roof bolts so they dont sieze in the threaded holes. The holes are already there and threaded, they are covered with tape and thats it.

I plan on adding an OEM rack in the near future as well, it shouldn't be to to difficult to add and you shouldn't need to drill new holes. There's been a few occassions the dealer didn't know what they were talking about when I had issues with my truck as well.

So are the holes under the black strip that runs down each side of the roof?

I just put mine on last weekend. OEM on a 2011 Tacoma. Took less than 45 minutes and we took one side back off once to tweak the bracket angle for a better alignment at the front.

After removing the rubber strip in the roof, you have to snap the upright pieces off the front clips in the channel. Here it is intact.

Here it is after clip-side removal.

Here it is with the right side complete and the left ready to put the rail in place.

It really is a simple task. The included directions are pretty good too. GO For it !

The weld nuts in the roof are under body-colored strips that are under the rubber strips. Run your finger over them and you can feel spot welds and the holes. Cut the holes out of the strips with a VERY sharp knife or x-acto blade. The threads are immediately under there.

My dealer asked $353 for the rack plus $100 for the install, but Dallas (TX) Toyata had it for sale online for only $222. I called them and they would NOT sell it over the counter at that price. I asked because I drive past that dealership regularly. I could order and pay online, then pick up. Instead, I got my local dealer (where I bought the truck) to sell it to me for the same price and I installed it, so instead of sale and install by dealer for just under $500 including tax, the DYI price was $222 plus tax. Shop around, be confident and go for it !

Ordered mine from trdparts4u (the internet accessories division of the Toyota Dallas) the other day and it should be in Tuesday-ish. As has been pointed out, your dealership is either lying or clueless.

    Cost are
    Rack: $315
    Labor: $125

And i asked the tech what way he was putting it in and he said they are not taking headliner down. and didnt know why someone said that they would.

Damn. I installed mine easily. Pre positioned holes (no drilling) and hardware that is really hard to screw up. My dealership wanted $190 for the install... i told them to F#ck themselves :D

    Either way you'll love it.
