For buying a Tacoma because you are from out of state? I had a dealership do this today, said it was a new rule they had in place(Colorado). They originally were going to take a deposit and get what I wanted allocated.

The state doesn’t like the tax dollars going out of state.

But, at least in MA, they get their cut when you register the car

But why would the dealership care?

Yep, a WA dealer refused to sell us a RAV4 & a Taco. Reason being they are not allowed to sell vehicles to HI residents. Toyota in Hawaii is owned by Toyota Pacific not Toyota USA.

Didn’t realise it was a problem between mainland states.

Unknown. But a GM of a Chevy dealer in Oklahoma told me he’d rather sell a C8 Corvette to a resident. It would have been my third vette he sold to me.

Maybe they get a kickback from the tax office. Who knows…

I wouldn't be amused. I wonder if there any legal precedent regarding this.
Is your money not legal tender ?

    So I looked it up...

Your state of residence is not a protected status. (Barring protected statuses and the like, businesses are pretty much free to choose who they sell to.) If a car dealer refuses to make a sale in such cases it's probably related to paperwork or other fine print they don't want to deal with.

Probably because they have a better chance of future word of mouth sales and a resident returning to them for service. In today's market it's gonna sell either way so they're trying to get everything they can from a sale. Just a guess.

Absolutely. If you own a business would you rather sell to someone locally who can service with you and refer friends and neighbors, or sell to someone you’ll never see again. Your local dealers just need to get better at allocation.
    Also, no trade, no dickcount.

Sort of. Turned away because of province not state.

I inquired about a truck in Alberta but they said they wouldn't sell to someone out of province. I called BS and they said they wouldn't budge on it because of "Toyota" rules. I said too bad....they could have sold it to me right then and there.

Fast forward a month and I'm in Alberta. I happen to be driving by the dealer and saw that the truck was on the lot so I went in. Talked to the sales guy and brought up that I was from out of town. "Why would that matter?" he said.

So really....I don't think it truly matters. No one has ever asked where I lived before I've bought a vehicle in person. Like the HI guy trying to buy in WA. If he was standing in the building in WA would they care if his address is HI?

"Taxes" don't matter to the dealer. So that's not a reason.

I can see on some exotics or something very specific there may be rules but for a Toyota truck I doubt there would actually be any actual problem. I imagine the real reason is that it's a little extra work for the dealer and they can just sell it to the next guy who lives in town.

It’s not even about profit, passed on a $15k over MSRP on a green 4Runner pro. It’s about doing business with those who do business with you. Community is important.

The only reason I can think of is they are hoping for a repeat customer.

Tell them you're planning on moving to the area soon and need a truck to help with the move. Look up a neighborhood near-ish to the dealership in case they ask where. See if that changes their tune.

True. I bought my truck in Montana, which has no sales tax. I live in Washington, and when I registered it?
Ohhh trust me, WA. got their tax $$.

I went to a dealership when I was shopping around for my Taco (around Sept) and I wanted to get a AG DCOR MT but they said no way in hell I would ever be able to get one. Yet I went to two other dealers that were willing to work with me, finally went with the one and here I am happy with my Taco :)

you could go to the bad part of town and find a condemned building and use that as your address. you could even add your own mailbox if it doesn't get stolen

I would wager it's this: Service. They would make thousands of dollars over the life of a locally owned vehicle, rather then one sold to out of state that they would never see again.
