It may be old school mentality. But ...
When I warm up my car, with a key I can just lean in and insert/turn the key to start it. With push start I have to sit in the car, depress the brake, and push the button.

I would buy the TRD based on resale value alone.

Tacoma's haven't had a real LSD since around 2008, we get computer simulated LSD thru the braking system. The downside to the Trail Edition is it is more expensive than an Off Road.

They still make them....When you build a TRD OR on the website you have to select 2wd or 4wd

I bought my 2016 TRD OR to rock crawl in Utah. In the meantime, it goes anywhere I want, and is a second bad weather rig here in the NW.

    + 1 here.
4WD can do much more, better in snow, better at boat launch, better re-sell value.
In case you change your mind and want to try off-roading, you can do it, not the other way around.
but for serious off-roading you need better/bigger tires, and a lift kit even for TRD-OR

When i bought there was a Offroad and Sport next to each other on the lot... couldn't justify owning a truck with a fake hood scoop so i bought the Offroad. Plus it had all the bells and whistles

Once a vehicle has over 60k miles or 5 years here, the resale of these 4wd tacoma trims are all about the same. Toyota dealers didn't offer anything special for my buddies 2019 trd when trying a trade for a newer truck. He did a lot better for a new nissan.

I am taking delivery of my Tacoma in about a week or two (fingers crossed, of course). It will be used off road for camping / hauling dirt bikes / hopefully hunting at some point, but not off road wheeling. Not sure if that fits the bill of off road or not based on the original post, but that is what I will be using it for. I am getting it to replace an aging 99 Ford Ranger that held down the same duties.

I was really surprised how capable the sr5 is all stock. It was much better in deep snow, and deep mud ruts than my gen1 sr5 tundra ever was. It even went through places in 2wd that i had to use 4wd on the tundra. The sr5 tacoma imo, is very under estimated what you can run it through.

Hell, I bought a Pro with no intentions of off-roading. Been almost 2 years now and never even seen a gravel road.

Bought it because I wanted to.

Heck, I have a TRD PRO and have no intention of off-roading it. I bought it because it had everything I wanted, and then some.

I would have to disagree. Even 2nd gen TRD models will pull more money than a standard sr5. I've been looking at 3rd gens on auto trader for months now. TRD models 10000% pull more money over all.

If your buddy didn't get anything special on trade in for a 2019 TRD, then he got hosed. People are selling used 3rd gen TRDs for more than they paid for them. That really isn't happening with the base models.

me. truth be told global warming has given me the opportunity to not engage the 4wd dial all that much lately or any of the other off road tools on my truck as much as I thought I would have by now with almost 20k miles. meh it is what it is, i guess…

Pretty much. I mountain bike and hike off of dirt and gravel roads but have as of yet to go on designated 4 x 4 trails. The truck is excellent in the snow, so I have no worries heading up to the mountains in the winter.

I bought mine a few months ago with no intention to off road. I was looking at a sport trim first but then found out the hood scoop is fake and lost interest.

Well were here in the northeast salt belt...trucks lose their resale pretty quick. Maybe in other parts trd's can be worth more after a few years, but not here.
