    Working now a list
I change my oil through the door in my TRD skid plate and have been since 2017.

The filter tool and ratchet work nicely one you fit them through the door.

Quick follow-up.... Valvoline finally received a filter. They took the TRD skid off. Took about 20 minutes to change the oil but took about 45 minutes to get the skid back on. I don't believe they had any specific tools for the (Taco) oil-change, so I hope they did a correct job. I had the old (OEM) skid plate the previous time the oil was changed. They didn't seem to be able to get to the filter through the access panel. The kid changing the oil said he tried the access panel but still couldn't remove the filter and also confessed it was the first time he encountered the TRD skid. He did admit it took so long to put it back on because he didn't want to strip anything on the reinstall. So far things look ok.

It’s a myth. If they were susceptible to that there’d be many horror stories here. But by all means, believe them if you prefer.

    @JakeJob

It was messy from the start...went downhill after that.

I'll only explain the first part...

Initially started with removing the oil pan bolt...dang-nabbit if the bolt did not come off easy! (Gorilla visited that area)

Once I was able to hand-loosen it I thought, OK all I have to do is move the bolt out of the way without too much splatter...well, that didn't happen.

Oil traveled from the small entry hole of the TRD Skid to the CAT Plate meeting area. Of course I forgot to bring my cleaning wipes! DOH!!!

I don't have large hands but that cut-out hole should be made an inch wider.

It was my first time (insert joke here) and it's a good learning experience...I was just anxious to get it done and that affected the rest of my work.

Yeah that hole is a little too small. That's why I use an extension so that my hand isn't blocking the path where the oil is going to drain. It's worked for me 2 of the 3 times so far. I think I might have tilted the bolt or something the last time which caused the oil to come spraying out and I'm sure the filler cap being off made it worse.

I've done plenty of oil changes but this truck has definitely thrown some curve balls. Hopefully you've learned what you need to on this one and it only gets easier for you. Somehow I went backwards on my last one...

So did we get that Fumoto installed so you won’t have to experience that again?

    Agreed with the learning experience!

I need to have a dedicated breaker bar instead of a standard size ratchet. Of course, I'm not going to tighten it like the dealership does so after this last ToyotaCare visit (20K Mile) in December 2022, I'll be doing the oil changes moving forward.

The oil filter housing was less frustrating but again, the torque to get it off required using a large size socket instead of the 3/8 extension (without the socket). The filter wrench has an outer sized attachment built into it that allows a larger socket to torque the filter wrench.

I'll take some notes and be better prepared for next time. Like I said, I was a bit anxious and taking some steps I wouldn't normally thus causing my frustration.

    Nope.

I didn't want to have it on with the next scheduled ToyotaCare oil change due in December 2022. I'll revisit the Fumoto in 2023.

Man...I'm glad I'm not the only one here that made a mess. I thought I did everything right and (cold engine, minimum oil drain pan distance, drip pan underneath & open fill cap) that oil came out like a JET and literally bounced right back out of the enclosed drain pan! It took me almost an hour to clean it up. I already bought the TRD skid plate, but now I'm hesitant to install it because I don't want to remove that clumsy/heavy plate for every oil single change if it's going to be this messy again.

Does the filter drain kit and Fumoto valve eliminate these kind of messes?

The TRD plate doesn’t require removal for an oil change. There’s an access door you remove by loosening 4 Allen bolts.

Yeah like Mr Quibble said, the pro skid plate has a small covered access door for the filter and alao a uncovered hole to drain the oil sump. No need to drop the entire plate to change your oil. But I agree, its like a cow pissing on a flat rock when you pull the drain plug.

Thanks, but I already own a TRD skid plate. I'm just procrastinating the install. I'm just wondering if the mess factor will require an occasional skid plate removal to clean up messes. The original "skid plates" are very easy to remove.

I guess the alternative is to get flamed for starting a new one on the same topic. Lol.

Damn brother, put that skid plate on and quit worrying about making a little mess once, maybe twice a year! It's designed to support easy oil changes.

seems like its not a simple job every time, maybe this is why Toyota only wants it done every 10k

Yes, it was messy for me and I was a bit frustrated with the spillage. Using some clean up wipes specifically designed to absorb oil takes care of the mess.

This drain valve works as advertised!

I had to use one of two options to remove the oil filter housing...and it involved using a breaker bar and a larger socket.

It can only get better...getting familiar with how I approach each step.
