No money, all went to truck...
I like this. The turbos come out and everyone starts asking will it last 300,000 miles and last 40 years? Sheet, have you ever held onto a truck for 40 years. Driven it 300,000? I doubt many of the critics even came close to what they are criticizing.

Because I'm so worried about this, I'll go ahead and save $55k on a 4th gen....then I'll go ahead and blow $6k tossing a turbo in my hooptie.:burp:

Does not worry me. My turbo SAAB 9-5 has been tough as nails.

If I have to spend a couple grand at the 150k mile mark to have a truck with more power than the 3.5, more torque at a lower RPM, and better fuel economy, I’ll consider it money well spent. NBD, complex machines require repair sometimes

The CRV is not a truck

Sounds like you are the perfect candidate to just look for the 3rd gen or older Tacoma, or some other certain older trucks

So you're concerned about a turbo on a gas engine but not a diesel? I'd also argue that the turbo is for consumers. If it was strictly EPA mandates we'd just have a gutless 4 cylinder. But to meet the EPA mandates, and the performance consumers desire, they added a turbo to the 4. Gives the best of both worlds.

Toyota has been making turbos for years and years, so its not like its new tech for them. We aren't reinventing the wheel here fortunately...

Well I have big concerns about that turbo. To start what do I want from a truck?
I want long term work, durability, easy service, the lowest cost of ownership possible over 300,000 miles.

I do not really care about a truck
    being pretty
    being fast
    towing 20,000 pounds
    getting 1 more MPG
    what is looks like

I need a low cost truck that will work. In 1994 I purchased a 3.0L V6 4WD manual trans powerless Toyota T100. I ran that truck for over 300,000 miles, ran it for 20 years and all I ever did to it was replace the water pump, timing belt and the other belts. The best truck I have ever had, the lowest cost most dependable work truck I ever drove. That is what I want from a new Tacoma.

I don't’ need the turbo. I don't need 300 HP. I can live with a 4 cylinder like the old indestructible Toyota 4WD truck. They were the best ever. I would love a Land cruiser 70, sold all over the world but not in the US.

20 years and 300,000 miles on my 94 T100 and 94 Subaru Impreza. That is exactly what I want. I want a car or truck to work for me not the other way around. I want money to stay in my investments not in a car company. That is how I was able to quit working at the age of 40. Freedom is a lot more important to me than anything I can get from a truck.

So you’ve never rebuilt the engine or the turbo on that Subaru? Because I lived in Colorado, and I haven’t seen a single one without engine problems. But I can totally see your T100 lasting forever.

I plan on doing some high elevation off-roading in the mountains. Naturally aspirated engines lose proportionally much more power at elevation than forced induction engines do. I think those that frequent high elevations are going to love the turbo.

I currently have an ‘09 Sierra half ton and I get 14mpg with towing gears. I now have a Suburban that tows my RV, but I still need a box. I’d also like to save some gas money and have a dependable truck. Enter the new Tacoma. If anyone is going to make a reliable turbo it’s Toyota. If you let it warm up/cool down before/after putting your foot in it I don’t see why it wouldn’t last a long time.

Can turbo be used for short drive? My drive to work is only 5 minutes or 15 minutes walking. I read that turbo engine are not good for short drive. Thanks

This is what I'm leaning toward now that I found out that manual is only offer for double cab. I want the two-door version for the 6 foot bed.

I have not---I have only ever owned two vehicles in my life; one was an automatic and the other a manual.

Modern turbos aren't the turbos of old. short distances don't matter.

Short drives are bad for all engines, not just turbos.

And whether anybody wants to admit it or not, you still have to let any turbo engine warm up before you start flogging it.

Even if it doesn't have a turbo it should be at normal operating temp.

I don’t know how hot this engine will have to run, but with most modern turbos, you have to get near 200°F for it to be considered “warmed up.”
