Regulations are certainly a driver, but a lot of us want more power/torque AND better efficiency. Turbos are a great way to achieve this.
The reliability doesn’t necessarily go to shit as a result. The engine is designed for the increase in load so generally it will be fine. Yeah there are additional components with the turbo but it’s not like there aren’t 100s of thousands of turbos out in the wild with 100k-200k miles and many more. And it’s not the end of the world to swap one out.
    This is the way.

Can't even by a new vehicle today that does not have computer monitor on the dash, a camera somewhere. Look at the outrage from Americans if thay can't use their phone with their vehicle with out using a wire. Car culture hasn't been the dominate culture in the US since the 1990s before Y2K.

car enthusiast culture and car-centric culture are not the same. We ABSOLUTELY have the latter

I'd argue that tech has much more influence on how Americans live that the automobile does. The auto, definitely shaped the American lanscape and the American way of life. I believe that has changed. Tech now has more influence over the landscape and lifestyles.

I don’t think it’s one or the other. We can have a car-centric society that also is affected by “tech”

I don't disagree. I think tech has transcended the car where it has come to what is centric in society. The entire auto industry sat almost idel for weeks at a time nearly two years ago due to chip manufactures prioritizing personal electronic device manufacturers over autos.

No concern, Toyota's been putting a turbo in the Hilux for over 20 years, and even longer for other sub-models.

People keep bringing up Hilux when referencing “turbo”. Yes, Hilux has 4 cylinders and a turbo, but it’s a 2.8 turbo diesel.

Hilux has a robust & proven motor, but you just can’t draw a line to the Gen4 Tacoma b/c it’s not a straight gasser like the 2.4T. Different compression, lower temps, less stress. You would trust that motor with your life while crossing a large desert, where Hilux’s are commonly found.

With 2.4T & hybrid, I wouldn’t bet against Toyota’s engineers, but we won’t know until we know.

I think it's brought up because that's the only data there is about Toyota turbos Americans have since we haven't had their turbos in our Toyotas. It will be fine and people can just buy the extended warranty if they think they are worried.

Nah, you need to take it off every 20k miles and let it soak in kerosene for 48 hours. Take a steel brush to remove any remaining carbon buildup. Oil it with reduced whale blubber, then let it bake in an kiln for a week.

At least that's what some of the turbo haters on here would lead you to believe.

My mechanic buddies aren’t happy about the gasser turbo. Diesels longevity benefit from a turbo, gassers not so much. We could have gotten legendary reliability, better fuel efficiency, and gobs of torque. But Toyota said you can only pick two of those for the American market. (Well one, don’t think the fuel economy is going to be mind blowing) And really…does long term reliability even play a role with the throw away mentality of the American consumer, oh look! Shiny! Believe most of todays buying public don’t have the attention span to actually get all the use out of their consumer goods. Only care about the latest and the greatest thing to keep on keeping up with the Jones’s. Which is at all time high with narcissistic “look at me” lifestyles caused by social media.

My 1st Gen is will be 25 years old in February, how many people actually keep their vehicles that long? My wife uses it, it gets driven daily. Only reason I bought a new truck because I got tired of the 1st Gen breaking down on trips, didn’t trust it anymore traveling. It wasn’t because I wanted a new truck.

Some people can't handle having something different. Even mechanic buddies.

Plenty times I've heard people say that Toyota doesn't "get" trucks. It always the same story, it's not what they like or are used to.

I get it, not every truck is for everyone. Isn't everyone going turbo any way? Not just Toyota?

Don’t have a problem with turbos per se. But…even Mike Swears was very resistant to turbos way back when. He knows they don’t have the reliability of a NA engine. Believe their hand was forced because of government regulations, and the market since it seems Americans can never have enough power, how much is enough? The answer is always more…

Clockwise if you plan on pumping premium, counterclockwise for regular. If you dicide to run race car fuel, turn it inside out. But I'd you plan on installing raptor lights, remove the turbo entirely. You don't need it because the lights add power.
