I've had 4 Wranglers over the years. An 85, 89, 99, and a 10. All bought used and used as toys. They have some advantages, some disadvantages. Saying which is best depends on the conditions it is used in. It is all about wheelbase. Sometimes a shorter wheelbase is an advantage, sometimes a longer wheelbase is an advantage. There are places where a Wrangler will go that a Tacoma won't, there are places where the short wheelbase will be a disadvantage and the Tacoma will prevail. All things being equal. You can't compare a heavily modified vehicle to a stock vehicle, going either way.

My Wranglers were better on narrow trails and for rock crawling. My Tacoma is better in mud and snow. Much better in snow. The longer wheelbase helps it track straight in snow and increases the odds of one axle being on firm ground in mud. For the conditions I drive in the Tacoma is a better option off road. Not many places to rock crawl in Georgia.

All of my Wranglers were toys. But I've always had a truck because while it was fun to take the top off and cruise around both on and off road there was a time when I needed to haul or tow far more than was possible in a Wrangler. My full size F-150's have always gotten better fuel mileage than any of the Wranglers. None of the Wrangles came close to matching the reliability of the Tacoma. At this point if I want something small and agile to drive off road my wife and I drive our Honda Rancher and Foreman.

Right, its like that in most states but it's not exclusive to Jeep, I can get an OHV sticker for our Subaru. It seemed like you were implying that it was a benefit to a Jeep when technically any vehicle can do it.

My friend had a CJ7 that in some instances was a better rock crawler than my CJ5 due to his Jeep having a 10" longer wheelbase

Nice, I love the old CJs. A lot of the dedicated or heavily modified Jeeps I see now all have extended wheel bases, they push the rear axle back and shift the front axle forward. Added bonus to approach and departure as well

Both my yellow 68 M38A1 and my Red 81 CJ5 had 1990 suspension technology but scored very well on a 20° RTI ramp . My 68Jeep easily could do 1200 RTI and my 81 was 1095 RTI

I recently drove from GA to hesperia to visit some family . I really love it in the high desert . I can't wait to plan another trip. That being said I dont think me and the wife with our 2 sons could swing a trip like that in a jeep . I've always wanted one and have worked for DCJ for going on 6 years and even though I've done frame swaps and have taken them apart and back together for years I still need the cargo space.

Yeah, I've drooled over their website too. Also go a nd take a look at "Legacy Trucks". Love the owner's 57' Chevy pickup!

Tacoma because of reliability and looks! My family has always had Toyotas and they've lasted long. My grandmother gave me my first car--a camry--and she didn't change the oil for three years. But guess what? Still worked but broke down after a year.

I can't say the same for Tacomas since I just got mine but I'm guessing good maintenance= longlasting.

As for Jeeps. I wanted one since I feel like it'd suit me. Looks very tough. But the price, space, and maintenance just added up. Soooo yeah.

    Tacoma over Jeep anyday.

Don't own either, but test drove both

Didn't like the manual of the JL, felt abrupt and with the 3.45, felt it didn't have enough punch, while the Taco on the other hand, only thing I had to get use to were the rear drums, clutch felt like my Audi's (Minus being st1) and felt comfortable and easy to drive.

I only wanna Manual 4x4, wanna own it until either me or it dies and think the Taco will outlast both me and a Jeep

The amount of prestine, scratch free, always clean, lifted, armored with overland accessory galore 3rd gens I see around here on base in AZ is ridiculous. Gotta maintain that image...

You described my thought process that led me to the Tacoma as well.

Also, every time I rent a Wrangler (I travel a lot for work and often need 4x4 for remote sites) I am always amazed at how bad the steering feels in them and how no door on it seems to close properly. They just do not feel as solid or stable on road as the Tacoma. However, I know from personal experience they are insanely capable off road, and are easy to work on if they break something. Like you said, I spend 98% time on road, and the Tacoma still amazes me at its capability off road (especially with good tires), so the Tacoma got the nod from me!

It’s possible, but my Tacoma is much better for that purpose. Loved my JKU...love my Tacoma now.
