Out of curiosity, are you re-gearing because you're going to a larger tire size or are you just unhappy with the stock gearing?

Both. I won't be going much larger than my stock tire size, but the gear hunting with the stock set up is enough to bother me I can only imagine what it will be like when I add more rubber.

I figured that was the reason. The stock gearing is pathetic. Hopefully you can get it done and start enjoying your truck. My solution was to trade it in on a manual.

I occasionally need the wife to drive me home when I've been hitting the bottle:cheers:, or I would have gone the manual.

Yep, I lost my long bed in the deal. I'm going to miss it for sure.

I don't think it will help at all. The tranny will still do the same shit, unless you remap that as well.

But if you want to spend money:

Pretty sure this might be correct, as far as I have heard the issue lies in the fact that they want to achieve better gas mileage, companies are adding more and more gears to Auto trans and using mapping changes, this is the result. Changing the gearing may help it from hunting under some condition or speed, but then it will just hunt in another. I.e. City vs. highway driving or vice verse

... basically at now different speeds according to the pre-mapped RPM shift points, which won't change.

Trade for, or buy, an MT... or use that fancy ECT button that you have.

I guess I'll push the button. Look into the tranny mapping, there is a lot more than just RPM range in the transmission programming. There are a lot of sensors feeding data to that ECU

I know that the tranny issue is pushing a lot of owner's buttons as well.

I just done a re-gear in my taco went to 4:56. Very happy with the change. Running 285-70-17 makes the rpm higher but more proper on take off. Did the speedometer recalibration. Got my regear from the JT Differential they were great to deal with. It only took a week to get them. East Coast gear supply has gears assembly with any ratio you want and if you want locking diffs, they'll will install them also, they do the same as JT. Check them out, give them a call
