I'd say it was from too much weight being lashed to the bedside (spare tire).

Yep. I saw yours in this or another thread, but that isn't the composite cracking, just the primary need for the stiffies.

I knew that I was either going to do a canopy or GFC, so the stiffies went on well ahead of time. It could have been all in my head, but the real felt tighter after I installed them. Less wiggling?

You guys have me worried now. Was about to place an order for a ARE CX HD. This has the internal frame. I was told I would not need anything to stiffen the bed sides. Almost every other Tacoma I see has a shell and can’t imagine there would be so many if this was a major concern?

No worries, just add a pair of good bed stiffners and enjoy your shell.

I have a CX shell and have had it for 2 1/2 years. I do have the bed stiffners. I have not had any problems but like toco silver said I am a bit concerned that it may develop cracks. I am beginning to wonder if I should remove the shell?.

I'll have to take a look at mine, would this be covered under warranty?

A well attached topper acts pretty much like a bed stiffener, but a light one- the tailgate still sometimes goes out of frame when I park on a steep side hill with a load in the bed. It’s enough that the tailgate won’t open and I have to push on the bed side to align it. No cracks yet though.

My second gen cracked trice there. Once repaired under warranty, not so the second time. I pulled the metal yoke at the back of the bed that cracked and had a strap welded on the outside at both corners. Never a problem after that. Note, it was the metal yoke that cracked, not the composite bed. The fact Toyota has radius cutouts there tells me they know there is a stress issue on the corners of the bed yoke.

My 3rd gen, I bought bed stiffeners when I bought the truck. Co-worker had her 3rd gen crack there as well before she put in bed stiffeners.
