Tacomas don't have to be perfect, they just have to be better than the alternatives. So far mine is. I use this as a tongue in cheek care guide for vehicles- " You treat me good, I treat you better. You treat me bad, I treat you worse." I really have a problem with performing good, on time and complete maintenance and service and then having the vehicle breakdown, run like shit or just have stupid failures anyway. GM, Ford and Chrysler all have done this to me. Toyota? So far, so good.

I really don't have much interest in the 4th gen aside from general curiosity in that it's the newest and "coolest" gen. I'm perfectly happy with my 3rd gen, thanks.

Oh, man. Just saw you have the OR Access Cab in the m/t. I like to think my truck's a unicorn, but you have the unicorn of unicorns! Awesome truck. How do you like it?

Still all in my head… but I’m keeping the chrome bumper!
We got way off topic on this thread… wasn’t it if we are stoked having our 3rd Gen with the 4th out. Talking about LS crate engines and taking the TW Delorean to the past. Our dads and grandfathers bitched just as much as we do now, they just didn’t have the internet, they had their garages, Marlboros and banquets. Old trucks/cars broke down just as much. Truth is everything built will break, take care of your truck and when something breaks fix it. I’m stoked on my rig and it was the best option for me out there when needing a truck. Life’s short, drive to wherever you like in whatever you want!

I'm pretty fortunate living in Canada in this respect, it's a Canada only truck(maybe Mexico too?) I had a short list of must haves- manual, access cab, and midsize. I guess that only left the Tacoma! I'm loving it, it's been great, no complaints, minor irritation with the clutch, the accumulator delete fixed that up. I'll put almost 20k miles on it in the first year, love driving it around, don't even need a reason! It certainly isn't loaded, but has all I need. No remote start, no phone charger pad, no tpms, no power sliding window, no crawl control, no blind spot monitoring. I don't care for any of those things so that helps! Lol. Plan on keeping it long term. :)

me, a 2nd gen owner watching the 3rd gen owners get their "4th gen, worst gen" chants ready is kinda fun.

just kidding. for real though, the best tacoma is the one you drive.

It always takes me a while to get used to a new generation of vehicle... take care of those 3rd gens for me, I'll be buying off of one of you in a couple of years when they've shaken the bugs out of the 4th gens and you're ready to update!

Yup! I wanted to replace my 1st gen with a 2nd gen but my truck just kept going and going with no problems, so I couldn't justify buying a new truck simply because I wanted a new truck. Sadly, my 1st gen was totaled in an accident so I suddenly found myself in the truck market. Got a 3rd gen because I wanted new and that was what was new at the time. I'm sure the 2nd gen is a great truck, and I'm sure the 4th gen will shake out to be a great truck, as well. I mean, they're all Tacomas. I loved my 1st gen when it was my truck and now I love my 3rd gen because it's my truck. But if I had a 2nd or 4th gen, well, I'm sure I'd love it too because it would be my truck. As they say, "we take care of our own."

But, hey, that's just like, my opinion, man.

The two options near the top of my list was a manual and a 6 foot bed. Unfortunately, living in the US, for some reason I can't get the access cab OR a 6ft bed with the manual. The manual was at the top of my list, since it's the one "must have" item I would use every time I drive the truck. So, for me, the manual won out. It's a great truck, but I think the manual access cab is the perfect truck to have.

Yep! I think we all just love OUR trucks.

every time a silverado/f250/ram/tundra/ranger/lifted/cummins/whatever pulls up alongside me at a stoplight I know we're both thinking "I wouldn't trade for anything"

I agree with the idea that whatever truck you have is the best. So yeah, I love my 2022 OR. In all fairness I think the 2024 has some good ideas going for it that I really like: the hybrid engine, newer suspension, easy to go with 33s to name a few. But I only have 30k miles on my truck, it is a 2022 a 3 gen that has most of the bugs worked out, so I'm not going anywhere truck wise for a while. Maybe in a few years when the 4 gen has proved itself I may go looking for a used Trailhunter . . . . again, maybe.

I love my 2017 DCSB MT, been a great truck since Dec. 2016. When I started shopping for a Tacoma, I wanted used, but I was VERY excited to be a Tacoma owner. I test drove a 2015 DCSB MT Offroad and then my now 2017. I really liked both. However, both trucks made me excited to own them and I enjoy driving my truck everyday. This 4th Gen does not "stir" that excited feeling. 50K for s fucking midsize :jerkoff::puke:

That is just part of owning a truck. I have a well-funded emergency fund. I make $120K a year. So far my 2017 TRD OR has had very few issues. All of which were covered by warranty.

Having to spend $5k plus before 100k miles in not "Part of owning a truck"

Any modern vehicle should be able to make it to 100k miles without any serious repair.

That's a horrible idea. What time?
This thread is has become a dumpster fire and now looks like some of the early 4th gen threads. SMH.

I would venture to say modern vehicles should go to at least 200K without major repair. If they don’t are they any better than what we had in the past? As tech advances it “should” be better than what it replaces, machines are supposed to make our lives easier. Can certainly think of other things I rather spend $5000 on than fixing oil leaks on a supposedly anvil reliable Toyota. My 1st Gen didn’t start getting engine oil leaks until after 350K as a point of reference. Getting them before 100K is unacceptable.

Yep, we used to hang out in the garage after work and on weekends complaining anything and everything, the internet has become the 24/7 garage hangout bitch fest. And boy howdy! Do we humans live to bitch and moan. ;) :D

Think most of the problems come from people modding their vehicles, then cry about it when it breaks when it is used and abuse beyond the manufactures design perimeters. If you don’t touch it, they tend to last longer.

The Tacoma was a compromise vehicle for me it, it isn’t my dream rig…it is however the best vehicle of doing nothing well. :)

Same. I wanted a mid size truck that I could build as an off-roadable daily. I came from a diesel BMW X5. Comfortable, great fuel economy (30+ highway), and loads of power (~600tq), just wasn't ideal for what I wanted. It's a big difference driving the Taco, but just about anything out there is going to feel like a fuel guzzling turd compared to my X5. I felt a Taco was my best option out there. Newer Jeeps are electrical nightmares, anything domestic comes with body rust as a standard option and failing sensors... yes 3rd gens have issues but overall Toyota is known for it's reliability.

I do think a lot of the hate on the 3rd gens comes from as far as power and economy depends on what vehicle you came from. Anyone who is "upgrading" to a 3rd gen probably loves it. To them it's plenty of power because what they had before was probably just as bad or worse. But anyone who is coming from something that had the proper amount of power is going to think WTF is this shit? Same goes for the tech, my Pro has a lot of tech but it feels like it's a decade old compared to my X5 that was 5 years older than this truck, but to someone who has never had a vehicle with tech thinks the Taco is a spaceship.

Now, I'm not against the 4th gen and a 4cyl turbski. I'll give it a year or two to let them iron out the issues, but I'm not against moving from a 3rd gen to a 4th gen. Unlike a lot of folks here I am not afraid of a turbo. I've had plenty, I know their capabilities and I know how to maintain them. The reality is smaller displacement with forced induction is the direction we will see a lot of manufacturers go because of emissions and cost. And unfortunately as manufacturing cost, EPA requirements and consumer demand continues to increase quality will continue to decrease.
