Just take a look at the 2022 Tundra recall for the same topic. Would guess this Tacoma corrective action work be nearly identical except the torque specs are different

I have a 2023 Tacoma and have the recall notification on the app. After reading the recall description along with this entire forum and others, last night I took a look at all 8 axle nuts. There is welding spatter on mine around the bolts like in other posters pictures. Not bad though and I wouldn't think anything of it except for this recall making everyone think about it. I took my Tekton 3/8 torque wrench that I use for my oil changes and with a standard 14mm Craftsman socket I went to work. The torque wrench with the socket sticks out enough to clear the stock trd off road Goodyear tires and fits in the tight space where the nuts are located, so I was able to undo the nuts and retighten them. I chose which nut to start, took it off, inspected the surface, saw no welding spatter underneath nor on the nut surface itself, put the nut back on, and tightened it to the 33 ft lbs. I proceeded like this through all 8 nuts. Not one had welding spatter underneath. If this really is all that is to the recall, it is pretty simple and I won't be bringing it into the dealership. Will keep watching for any new information, but probably won't be any until April or later. Inspecting the nuts though and torquing them all to the 33 ft lbs, Im not going to worry about it any further until more information comes out.

Whoever inspected your rear axle, and put red markers, cannot see slags. Or really do not give a chit.

Those marks are from the factory, it has not been inspected from the recall.

Yeah, that nut in the picture - looks like a tiny spot actually touching the edge of the nut at 7 o'clock, possibly at noon too? Feel free to put a wrench on there quick just to make sure it is snug, and check back once in a while until it can be taken in officially.

I was talking whover did the marks from factory, either cannot see slag, or really don't give a chit. I never said from recall inspection crap.
You do whatever other people wrote in this forum, and wait for recall notice in mail.

I checked them a few weeks ago just to see if they were finger loose (I know I should have taken a wrench to them) and they were fine. Will probably check soon.

I called my dealership and asked if they would do an inspection before the recall and they said I would know/feel it if something was wrong. These are all the pics I took. Think its worth pushing for them to retorque?

Cripes. Those first two pics... does anyone know, do they do any welding after the nuts are installed? Looks like slag on the nuts themselves?

Can you take a wire brush to them quick and see if that comes off, like gumpy dirt? Just seems weird seeing that there... but I also make the statement I am no real welder...

I am not going to take a wire brush to it just incase it is slag, I want them to see it. But I am going out wheeling this weekend so will jump under there tonight and see if I can remove it with my hand/double check the nuts are tight

The welding slag you’re showing is nothing new.
Go look at any 5th gen 4runner and I’m willing to bet most of the them have the exact same weld “slag” and those are built in a completely different factory in quality control capital of the world.

So the key thing to look at is the nuts not being seated. The problem isn’t the welding spatter that you can see, It’s all about what is or is not on the nut seating surface
