Most people are afraid of change. But change is inevitable. And in most cases (with the right attitude), change its good.

I work in manufacturing for a large company, probably best to leave it at that. As far as lessons...I think it's very hard to get ahead working for someone else. Put as much money into a 401k or something along those lines when you're young. Not that it couldn't get wiped out too, but so far it's working out. The market goes up and down but over the long haul you should make out ok.

Everyone talks about how much prices have gone up. I always tell people to think of it the other way, how much the value of our dollar has gone down. That's what happens when you print money out of thin air. In the old days one person in the household could work, have a house, send their kids to college, go on vacation, and have a normal life. Try that today.

    Change it
    or
    Accept it
    or
    Move jobs
    and
Have an attitude of gratitude for the good things in life, no matter how limited.

With that said, I can commiserate with how you feel after many decades in the workforce...

100% agree with this right here. I think its a very shitty cycle we are in. Profits trend up, wages trend neutral, all while cost of living trends way up. Thats not sustainable. I think it also leads to widespread reduction in moral

I'm in that boat along with many others who currently hate my job. Reality though is that it's not the job itself that I hate but rather the poor management and lack of direction. Covid definitely played a big part in all of this as we were already a small shop to start, roughly 40-45 employees, but we're now below 30 total. Family owned so that comes with both good and bad. Family and family friends seem to have one set of rules and benefits while the rest fall under a different set. Money is fair but this is the only job I've ever held where I had to ask for a raise. Paid vacation is skimpy but taking time off without pay is allowed. My biggest issue is that at my age I'm close enough to retirement age that getting hired on somewhere else I face age discrimination.

Been working full time since I graduated high school and while I've been fortunate enough to have had mostly good jobs, most were just that, a job. I really never have figured out what I wanted to be when I grow up and sadly that ship has sailed. I once joked with a friend of mine that I had often dreamed of a life in porn I'm about an inch short. Most of those guys are taller than me.

Retired in 2018. You guys make it sound like such a good decision. I do remember work downtimes but that was mostly water cooler bitching.

Latest passion, photography. One of the better pictures I've taken in the past few weeks.

Semi-retired at the moment, but looking for another gig. A small business working for myself is a lot more appealing than working for someone else.

If you don't have enough free time, don't enjoy what you do or the wages aren't worth the effort you need to find something else. There's more to life than work.

    Op I hear ya.

Skeleton crews at my place of work and we are expected to do the work of 2-10 other people and make significant progress every day while also attending meetings 40% work day?!? And they ask why isn’t it done yet when they sure as hell know more problems have arisen.

I work in a good field and could make a lot more if I tried to shift my job again but BUT they pay me every two weeks and the longer I am there the more money they pay me, my job is not in jeopardy and it’s close to home. If I wanted to make more money I could travel and miss out on home life, and I don’t want that. I find my job mildly interesting at times but the teamwork and shared cause effort is totally lacking. Also my immediate management is terrible I work better with the directors than I do my bosses.

I’ll chime in as the old guy seemingly taking some shite in this thread.

Forty years of full time work with no gaps or time off other than short vacations. Never applied for or received unemployment in my life. There’s always been something to do.

I held thirteen different jobs in my forty years. Some lasted days, others weeks, several four to five years, and one for 18. All had moments I liked, or I wouldn’t have been there. All made me wade through crap I was either willing to put up with or not. Never, ever were any of them easy, or I wouldn’t have been there.

Over those forty years, I recall moments of joy and true camaraderie with others. I also recall feelings of sheer, hellish frustration. Bosses that could be great one day and suck the next. Employees that could be great one day and suck the next.

I left bad circumstances to find better ones, but I never quit on myself. I always saved a little from what I earned and never touched any of it until now.

Now I’m retired and work at enjoying life with my wife, family and friends. This did not come easy, but I got there.

That’s life, at least for me and those I know well.

Suck it up, butter cup, and drive your life forward through the good, bad and ugly challenges thrown at you. It’ll pay off in the long run.

I had a millennial employee blow my mind (Gen x here). This was a valuable life lesson from 12 years ago or so.

We had some complaining going around about pay. Not one MFer had anything to complain about. The lowest guy was 43.50 hr and our higher paid was over 60.00 hr. This certain employee just laughed, pulled out a printed pay stub, looked at it and said "Best fucking job ever!" and then folded up his pay stub and put it back...then walked out of the room.

I asked him about it and he said every time he wanted to complain about his job, he would look at his pay stub and think about all the things he can afford/owns. He also said "I've worked a hell of a lot harder for a faction of what we make here..."

I also had a lineman supervisor once tell me "busy hands are happy hands. If people have time to sit around and complain, they aren't busy enough."

I like telling those lessons I learned from younger people than I. My hats off to them. I changed my mindset and was able to focus harder on what was important which also helped me meet my goals. I retired Aug 16th of this year at 49 years old. I have no plans of going back to any job unless I get bored. So far working around my property and trying to keep a 750 hp Mustang on the road has been challenging enough.

Yup, I grew up in a quiet "rich" town with large yards and whatnot. Dad worked, mom did the homemaker thing. They weren't wealthy by any means but very frugal folk and prioritized us having a quiet area to grow up plus private education over buying nice cars and such. We did go on a couple of vacations but it wasn't the norm. Roughly 20 years after my parents bought that house as a new construction, my wife and I paid double that price for a house half the size, one third the land, decent area but not the property values of the old house, for something that was 70 yrs old and needed extensive repairs. I know things go up over time but....not that I don't agree with you that it's a multifaceted problem.

Job security is huge, one of the reasons I stay put. There's been 2 rounds of layoffs in 24 yrs and both times midlevel management that was usually duplicite was targeted, my level was untouched. Late 2020 3 people out of 100 in my unit at my level were laid off as well..one I didn't know well, the other 2 were lucky to have had a job as they were just not good at their job in any aspect.

My commute used to be an hour a day, not horrible but still something. Shifting 4 yrs ago to working from home and I have a new balance to my world.

Management..in my current state the ones I deal with just suck, but fortunately they're rarely involved with me. I'm pretty much left alone to do my job and I do it well and honestly so I can maintain that. I've had good leadership in the past too but stuf happens. One of my longtime leaders (who I still like as a person but don't respect as a leader anymore) did have one good piece of advice when we got on better.."you never know who your manager is going to be tomorrow".

I was burnt out and done this year.

It wasn't the pay, which was good.

It wasn't the job, which was actually quite fun, varied, and interesting.

It was the people. The people sucked. Nepotism was allowed into the door. Communication broke down into a death spiral. Trust was broken. Respect was lost. I left on bad terms, but at least they were on my terms.

New place is different. It's not as challenging or varied. The people are even stranger. It's a culture shock going from a R&D role into a production one. But it has a lot of potential, and potential means that I'm only limited by my own initiative, therefore the world is mine for a change.

All I can say is that I should have left a year before I did. Had I quit in December and not April, I could have kept a few more contacts to network with. If you're unhappy, it's a warning sign, and one way or another, that job is not going to stay in your future for long. I knew this, but I still didn't listen to my gut. I humbly suggest that if you're in the "I feel dread on Sunday night" club, start pumping that resume now.

When I was younger I wanted to move up the ladder in my company. I got burned several times over less qualified people due to nepotism, and the more I see the more it exists. That plus other reasons are why I no longer care to do that, nor go above the norm. I always give an honest day's work for an honest day's pay, and I don't sit on my butt half the day socializing like some do. But I'm not going to go 110 miles an hour all day to be told end of the year I get the same rating and raise basically as that person who fucks off and does so with impunity, be they a favorite or otherwise.
