I agree with nd to see a sleep clinic...a good one too.

This is a true story, joke if you want.:D

My wifes uncle only slept about 2 or 3 hours at a time for nearly 40 years. He just dealt with it. Our local hospital has really grown in the last 2 decades and now has one of the best sleep centers in the state.
He went and had them do sleep studies for several nights and this is what they did.

They told him his tongue was falling back in his throat and causing his air to be restricted. Causing him to awake. He did not realize this was happening. To shorten the story a little, they made a small incesion in the front of his neck, and went in and removed part of the back of his tongue.

I heard him say himself how he was immediately able to sleep a full night.

Now this may not apply directly, but a good sleep center might be able to help.

For the jokesters, yes they shortened his tongue!:p

dudde i have the same exact problem... it sucks! ive found that if you dont think you are stressed or thinking about something.... you most likely are... just gotta do a complete brain dump at night... i find having my fan on helps get me to sleep. just listening to the hum of it. also.. seriously go to your pharmacy and pick up some melatonin. its over the counter and its not expensive at all and works wonders. i can def. tell when i havent taken it because i just dont sleep. you take one about an hour before you go to bed. Also, when i was looking this disorder up... i learned that you should stop watching tv, computer, anything bright. I did this and it helped a little bit. just read a book or magazine for a little bit. i find this helps wear me down.

    hopefully some of this helps.

    good luck!

    Yep.
I have only slept for 3-4 hours a night for the past two years now, at least twice a week there is 0 sleep. Have seen two docs and tried a couple different drugs but I am not a fan of the side effects. It doesnt affect my performance or life too bad, just sucks feeling a little tired most of the day. it's more frustrating than anything... I like sleep.

I take melatonin. They make 2 kinds, one that helps you go to sleep, and one that helps you stay asleep. My doctor recommended it to me vs. prescirption meds. You can get it at any drug store for cheap.

melatonin is great but you cant take it for too long. since your body naturally produces it, if you take it for too long your body goes "awesome, we get this stuff every night without having to make it" so your body stops producing it. then when you stop taking it you wont be able to sleep for days. that happened to me and it sucked. on the 3rd day i was getting delirious.

like you, a fan or some kind of white noise works well for me too. but tv and stuff also works. my problem is that as long as my brain is numbed, or distracted i'm fine. but as soon as the lights go out and the distractions are gone my mind starts racing and i can't sleep. it works best for me if i go to sleep with some kind of distraction on like tv or music

that sucks, i feel your pain. i have many meds for sleep and they all make me feel groggy the next day and htey mess with my memory alot. i hate taking them.

yeh i rarely take it anymore because of that. the only time i use it is when i absolutely cant go to sleep. and even then... it still takes me a while. i used to fall asleep with the music on. tried the tv but kept waking up because the lights flashing would somehow get me or the sound would just be so loud. i live right next to a railroad track too so that doesnt help either.

Make sure you are gettign enought physical activity.

Try relaxing breating stuff or yoga (sounds cheesy? It freakin works)

Try taking melatonin every once and a while.

i started using that a little over a year ago, and as long as its in teh house i dont need to touch my pills.

getting more physical activity doesn't seem to work for me, but yoga does. i haven't done it in a while but for a bit my gf was into it. i told her i'd do it with her if she did it naked. she agreed so i started doing yoga. the only workout i've ever done where i wanted a nap at the end

not me, sex is like a shot of caffeine for me. always has been for some reason.

Sex is definetly a caffeine for me too but O'well I'm not quitting. I'll just stay up late those nights. :)

I found that the biggest problem with my sleep has been stress. I have reduced alot of stressful situations in my life over the past year working with a few thearpist and it has made a huge difference. I'm sleeping 8 hrs a night now unless the dogs wake me up. I still wake up early though even if I go to bed late I wake up around 630. I took the melatonin for awhile and it helped but I didn't want to take it too long and have my body quit producing it. Still take it every now and again if I'm just not feeling sleepy.
