Rumor (well call it that for now, posted in a thread here) that 3rd gen frames have the same issues. Still nothing released from Toyota though, so I guess time will tell

Dude I remember this in AZ, new chips almost every week when I’d wash. I eventually gave up caring, but man did it suck finding them constantly.

Ive been keeping a bottle of touch up paint in my truck now, after each wash I check for new ones and touch them up... soon my truck will be more touch up paint than factory paint.

I can see that. It’s the same frame design even if it’s a different treatment process.

And I do, probably more than most here, I think most would also feel the same way about a new truck exhibiting rust and flaking paint one month in.

Bahaha. My cement I had PPF’d and still doing chips outside the PPF. I don’t get it my mom’s Jeep which is an FCA product that everyone bags on here is in better shape paint and rust wise, also no mechanical issues yet. If I wanted a disposable truck I would have bought a domestic for less.

    Seriously ?
It was hit on the bottom. Scratch any metal and see what happens.
Ask for a 10 year 100K warranty for the inconvenience. or buy a Delorean. Problem solved.

my parents winter in AZ, my dad's Jeep is trashed from the rocks hitting the windshield, he has 35k on it (2018), and has done 3 windshields already... He's given up and just has 5 giant chips on his current windshield.

I used solvent based wax and grease remover from work to prep. Takes all the dirt and oil off without removing or softening the paint. I didn’t have much rust starting just enough to notice so I sprayed over it without sanding. If yours is worse I would hit it with some light sand paper or a scotch brite pad to try and knock off as much rust as possible. The POR-15 can be applied over light surface rust without prepping but not flaky or gritty rust so it depends on how bad yours is whether it needs prepped or not. Wouldn’t hurt to scuff it a little regardless just for piece of mind. The only places I had to mask of was around the front cab mount to keep the paint from getting on the rockers and mud flaps. I didn’t care if any got on the body underneath but I was very careful and it actually came out nice and neat. Only spot I got any real overspray was on the floor beside the cab mounts (you can see it in the photos) but it was inside of the pinch welds so I just left it alone. Just go easy. Little careful light sprays so you can control where the paint goes and you will be ok.

Yes I understand chemistry and physics but thank you.
I don’t think that’s how that works, just asking for the 10 yr /100k warranty, I will definately bring it up at my first service appointment though I doubt they give a flying f**k.

Sorry I was busy writing a harsh email to bf Goodrich because I just got ko2’s and they already starting to wear. Think I’m going to try putting a ppf on them.

Thanks man! Its not flaky, just surface rust from where the paint started peeling, may just hit it with the POR ontop. I'll probably mask off around the underside of the bumper to avoid overspray.

Yeah won’t hurt to mask of anything you are worried about. I will say I have never trusted any kind of paint out of a spray can but this stuff really impressed me. I’ve used POR-15 out of the quart can and it’s worked great so I gave it a shot in the aerosol and I’m glad I did. Good luck, you will feel a lot better after you do it trust me.

Agreed, just more ticked I'm having to do this to a new truck, as I'm sure you were too.

Truck cap , husky liners, deflector shield, ARE truck cap.
Hate to break it to you but exposed metal will rust in any environment. As far as paint chipping it’s what it does from rock impact. If you don’t like the truck sell it and move on.
