New wheels on the old hubs using new spokes. It was my first time actually doing this and took me only one time to relace a rim twice to figure it out. I initially tried using the old spokes but they were too long so I ordered up what I needed. Mounted and trued them, and so far so good. New freewheel, 510 chain, seat, seat post, Walmart tires for now. Removed the old Diacomp front brake setup since I never really used it anyway. Got it all back together a few days ago and finally the weather broke today so I put about 3 miles on it this AM around the neighborhood. Feels good to get back on it. Went to Lowes after lunch and found a tub large enough to soak the frame in to get all that rust off.

Any good coating to use to keep the rust at bay?

Edit: Schwinn XS Pro, circa 1993.

I almost had my hands on a very nicely built Patterson when I was a kid. An older guy from the neighborhood owned it and had raced it when he was a kid. Another kid in the neighborhood got dibs on it before me. I begged him to sell it to me because I’d keep it as is and I knew if the other kid bought it he’d destroy it by switching on a bunch of nonsense parts. He sold it to the other kid…….he fucking ruined the bike as I said he would. The buyer was pretty pissed afterwards. I told him to eat shit on that one because I warned him. So I ended up building up my Profile Champ

Anybody ever race an indoor or street track? I used to do wednesday night racing on a go cart track with wood jumps. I was king because I would run a 15 tooth rear sprocket. Still ran knobbies though.

Never got to try that, but indoor would have been sweet in New England winters here. What knobs would you run on them?

Yep, we had indoor dirt tracks with wood jumps. Then got upgraded to indoor with dirt jumps. Puget sound area here in Washington state early 80's. Looks like one of the guys in the pic is rocking a jofa mouthguard.... lol can't believe I can remember the name. I remember when Oakley began, wish I bought stock then but I was a young grom. Fricken older now lol!

My Supergoose (race bike) had snakebellies and then Schwinn Maximizer 710s.

My 86 Schwinn Freeform EX had Haro and then Hutch tires after I wore out the OE's.

My 85 Wind Styler had Hutch tires.

My DB Strike Zone had Kendas after the OEs wore.

So tell me, what were the other parts?

I seem to remember reading that racers sprayed different concoctions on their tires to help with "grip" on the hard floors. Hairspray & other things too.

Had a PK Ripper with Landing Gear forks. Tuff Neck, GT bars, AME grips, Flight cranks, Shimano DX pedals and brakes. (have the shin scar to prove it) Araya rims with Phil Wood hubs and some sort of plastic seat. ABA Cal 4 #85, UBR #85. Lived not far from the Patterson Bros. Best thing I ever did was start riding with them. Went to high school with Brian. Their dad always talked smack because I never rode a Patterson. A great pair of guys to get spares from because their garage was a bike shop. Still talk to them from time to time but mostly on FB now. Their house was a revolving door of pro's that would come and stay with them.

Looks like a Comp 3 clone, or maybe a later generation of actual Comp 3 after I got out of the hobby.

Let's see what I remember... I raced early to mid 80s. Aside from a stock Huffy I rode for two or three races when I started I ran:

'82 Robinson Standard frame & fork, before moving to
    '86 (?) GHP Pro Length F&F.

I transferred parts from the Robinson to the GHP
    -MCS cro-molly bars
    -ACS Stoker stem
    -Tange Sekai MX5 head set
    -Kashimax Aero saddle
-Ashtabula Black Magic cro-molly 1 piece cranks
    -Hadley sealed bottom bracket
-Ukai alloy rims with Sunshine hubs
    -IRC Hard Track tires
    -Suntour 16T rear sprocket
-Front sprockets, I'm drawing a blank on the maker, but they were graphite chain gears. I had 43T, 44T and 46T, depending which of my three regular local tracks I was at.
-Pedals, I went through lots... my favorites were SR 464 Custom-M... I know I used MKS for a while... the two I remember lots of my friends liking that I didn't were the Haro SE (parralelogram profile, never felt like I had a good grip) and SE Bear Traps (I have enough scars on my shins to even think about getting a pair of those)
-Grips, I also tried several. I liked simpler ones like Ame' Tri Grips, or Oakley 0.5.

Much like freestylers would do sometimes for better braking. I heard of hairspray, A'me Grip Stick (for applying them to bars, not for holding the grips) as the more popular ones.

That's sweet. I remember the bros and Richie "Avalanche" Anderson, one of the guys I raced with had a Patterson. The plastic seat, was it the one piece (Uni)? I can imagine the stuff those guys had laying around would be a museum even then..and I always liked the close knit aspect of that team, Vance really loved Richie like his own as well.

Def a Comp III pattern if not original.

My 1999 Dyno NSX, even after all these years she’s pretty damn perfect. All original, hardly any rust, just the rear tube has a slow leak 72D374D6-F4D4-4B0C-A098-8042AA363261.jpg D05D12EA-368A-4254-B900-B7FA8DC8E3E5.jpg 09ECC290-500D-4323-9B46-C03BE8DFAD4C.jpg 252F6C89-8C68-4DEF-83E6-E8377EAD6114.jpg
