I quit cold turkey about 12 years back. Used to smoke 3 packs a day of Marlboro's. At first I had really strange dreams, and if I was driving behind someone who threw a butt out the window I would think about stopping and taking the last drag! After a week my family started talking to me again. I smoked for 28 years, so I don't know yet if it will affect my health in the future. Good luck.

How is everyone doing on quitting?

I started Chantix on January 1st and had my last cig on the 7th. Today is the 14th and I have never found quitting to be this easy. Chantix may be a miracle.....

Imagine being on your 2nd, 3rd, and 4th day without a cigarette, and the thought of having a cigarette only crosses your mind once or twice in a day?

I have tried to quit about 4 times a year for the past 5 years, and I can enthusiastically say this is the best experience I have had. Better than cold turkey, better than gum or patches, better even than Allen Carr's Easy Way books and tapes.

Good luck everyone and trust me, I couldn't be happier I quit wasting my money and good health for no benefit. I am not stuck in that horrible, disgusting, brainwashed loop that is smoking anymore!

I'm doing terrible. I was going good for a few days until the game I will not speak of happened...I'll get back on the wagon soon though.

I think we can give you a pass on that one, especially if alcohol was involved!

    Things and stuff and such
Thread revival. I've been smoking a pack a day for the last 8 years. My best friend and I decided to quit. I've had enough of that terrible habit. Its expensive, my clothes and house smell bad, I'm quitting before my truck starts to stink. My friend has gone a week without a cigarette now, I'm only on my 2nd day but I think I'm doing pretty good besides wanting to scream at somebody every once in a while. I've been chewing toothpicks and gum all day, that really helps keep me distracted from smoking. If I have trouble I'm going to try that Chantix. How is everybody else doing?

I started taking Chantix on January 1, 2010, after having smoked a pack a day for the past decade. I am 25 yrs old. That is something like 80,000 cigs total.

Chantix is the shit. I have tried to quit so many times before, this is the first time I have been able to get into the lifestyle of not smoking, without the "attempt" to quit taking up so much of my time, energy, and thought process so as to make it nearly impossible.

I am happy, found myself drinking far less than before (not an alcoholic, but a pretty regular drinker) and in general getting more accomplished at work and much happier than before. I feel like I finally am free of that trap and only smoked one really drunk night since I quit altogether which was on the 6th or 7th (the directions instruct you to continue to smoke for the first week, at which time honestly you don't even want it anymore).

I was in a good place mentally to quit though, having tried the Easy Way (book, book on cd) most recently and having completely decided to be rid of smoking.

Good luck to you and know that this is the most important decision you can ever make. There is nothing so wasteful, disgusting, and harmful that you could do to yourself 20 times a day than to suffocate yourself with burning, cancer causing, highly addictive chemicals.

Remember, cigarettes don't relieve boredom or stress. They are not fun or tasty. It is only an illusion to keep you buying cigarettes.

I quit a year ago this past December. Had a tumor suddenly pop up and not knowing why or whether cancer I thought after smoking for over 30 years how stupid this was and the fact that now everyone treats smokers like criminals. Was asked unbelievable amounts of questions by the hospital prior to surgery and knew I couldn't smoke while in hospital so flipped last one about 2 hrs before surgery. Thankfully surgery was successful, no cancer and haven't smoked since.
I found the big thing is to keep your mind moving, dis-associate smoking with the things you do (i.e. I always lit up as soon as I got in the car driving) - do something else to keep busy/unable to smoke. It gets easier with time but don't beat yourself up if you don't make it the first time around - it can take multiple times trying. I just really believe it is 99% mental and if you can make your mind up and be 100% convinced, you will do it!

At this moment, I am wearing a nicotine patch, have nicotine gum in my pocket, and a pack of Marlboros down in the car. I manage to get through the workday with smoking, and no longer smoke inside, but dagnabit, I want smokes with my beer!

Drinking can really test you. Beer is how I got re-started a few years back after stopping for almost 2 years....thought, ah, one won't hurt. That's all it took. I didn't drink any beer for about 4 or 5 months after stopping a little over a year ago...subbed in mixed drinks and wine occassionally and then sorta "eased" into a beer with a little concern...but was working outside while drinking and once again I think it helped to be busy/unable to smoke while working on a beer. To me, it's different than just sitting down like at a bar or at home and drinking.
