Wrong side... Catch can should be on the PCV hose on the driver's side cylinder bank:

The 3.5L head design can cause oil to pool near the back of the head on inclines and get pumped up through the PCV valve. This can cause a lot of smoke during steep off-road climbs. That's the real reason for a catch can on our trucks. Millions of pavement-princess Tacomas do just fine without one.

Since you put the catch can on the vent hose upstream of the throttle body, which side of the can sees vacuum? ;)

From my experience there’s no benefit shy of the steep angles.

The v6 ring lands have been awesome thanks to the d4s.

The up coming 4 banger I’d consider a catch can but it’s realm hard to say how effective it will be.

The out going port injected four cylinder rav4s are all burning oil and I blame recirc for most of it.

Not really a need for a catch can. Our engines are D4S which has port injection to help keep the valves clean

Could someone please explain this deficiency with the V6. Is it limited to just one side of the V6 heads or both. Pictures of the inside of the head(s) would be appreciated.

Currently, I have a vision of some oil collecting at the back of the head(s) on inclines that somehow collects deep enough to be routed somewhere it shouldn't be. My ignorant thoughts are: wouldn't a pipe from the back of the head(s) directly down to the oil sump get rid of the problem on inclines?

^The PCV valve happens to be at the rear of the bank 2 valve cover. Oil may collect at the rear of bank 1 head in an incline, but there isn't a vent hose there connected to the intake.

Drainage pipes would solve this problem, but it requires drilling and tapping both heads and the oil pan. It's prone to introducing leaks. A catch can is easier.

Jeeps with the 3.6L V6 have the same problem, and there's a plethora of catch can kits available, some even with factory-style quick-connect fittings.

So, Toyota failed to take into account the attitudes these trucks would be operated under and did not provision oil galley drains in the most rear position on the heads & block down to the sump. I wonder if Toyota originally designed this engine for transverse mounted applications.

One more question for those in the know: Does the oil being introduced into the intake manifold cause any long-term problems other than a possible carbon buildup on the intake valves? I recognize the D4S fuel injection may in time remove the possible carbon buildup making it all moot.

Otherwise, if I do not mind the occasional smoke out my tail pipe when loitering on steep hills do I need to be concerned?

I believe some other threads that talk about gen 3 engines pointed out that the engine was originally used in the Sienna van which is front wheel drive and uses a cvt to boot.

Look at this OP's intake. But valves look fabulous.

Toyota used the 2GR family in both longitudinal and transverse applications. Lexus IS350 and GS350 had it since 2005, and RC350 since 2015. The Tacoma is the first off-road application.

Burning too much oil will poison your catalytic converters more quickly.

I consider the catch can to be just another off-road mod where Toyota came up short, like the diff breather relocation or removing the front airdam.

Click through his posts in that thread and you see a lot of dirt and sand buildup in the intake. That engine was killed by his K&N filter.

It is not about his intake. Look at his intake valves. Even in that situation, d4s does its job

The catch can will keep that oil residue out of the intake. That is one positive……about the only one.

I don’t think it makes it back into the crank case. It cakes up the intake manifold if anything.

I have the jtl setup with canister extension. Been running most of 231k+ miles works great . Does it job ,catches all that crude that will not make it back threw the intake manifold. Highly recommend these for our trucks .
