I personally enjoyed Sand Castle. Maybe it was because the story took place around the Desert Storm timeline and the locals all were in agreeance in a very believable thing which is usually applicable to most of the troops overseas. They just wanted them to end their occupation and go home.

I hear you. My dad was drafted into the coast guard and remained state side because of his critical occupation as a machine tender in a paper mill. He was drafted in the coast guard as a weekend warrior. The action that the coast guard saw in rescuing survivors and surviving attacks from Uboat is amazing. You won’t see many movies made of this action. According to everyone involved, we got our asteroids kicked during the first part the war.

It was about survival and saving lives and little actual fighting and attacking an enemy.

Sailing around wreckage in the shallows in Buzzard Bay just off the coast of RI reminds you how close the war really was. Lot of unsung hero’s you seldom hear about in the coast guard. We supplied the entire allied effort with our oil and other supplies, much of which was sunk and lost just off our coast. This is not to mention the people lost in sinking ships.

Few war movies are made around getting your asses kicked for the months and years that preseeded many victories. We were loosing before we won anything. It makes using the A Bomb and the movies around that, more understandable.

I felt the same way about Dunkirk a year or so ago. The absolute worse movie I ever paid cash to see.

I watched Dunkirk several times trying to view it as documentary with little or no thought given to story line and character development. It then became slightly better then unbearable.

Kudos to you for sitting through it several times. It’s an interesting take on it.

To this day I wonder how the film got the recognition it did. Made absolutely no sense to me.

I think you’re right. War makes little sense to the participants. Everyone is running around trying to save their own asses while the main event I saw was a message statement of human sacrifice by civilians trying to save lives.

I can’t imagine taking my sail boat into a war zone with my kids to pull soldiers out of the water while putting my family at risk. That’s about the only theme I got out of it. The rest was what makes for poor entertainment during real war. The soldiers are just ants being stepped on and brutalized by the enemy war effort. It makes for poor entertainment when you see much from the ants POV.

The movie doesn't do the actual events justice.

It doesn’t because we’re seeing it from the 3-4 points of view of participants and there is no hero whose actions lend order and meaning to a defined story line. There was no organization for example, to the civilians crossing the channel to save lives. War is chaos. It’s a chaotic movie and you’re right, it’s hard to sit through without a lot of munchies.

    Agree....
It’s not a movie that makes sense unless you know the story going in. IMO, that makes it real hard to follow.
After I saw and hated it first, I went back to read a little more background. Then, got a big bowl if popcorn, turned on Netflix and didn’t dislike it quite so much. Like you, I’m not much of a fan....but it seems to work for many, on the other side of the pond.

I watched the “ last if the Mohegan's” with Daniel day Lewis six times before I liked it a lot. Ya gotta luv Netflix.
