If I were to choose a place to live in Cali permanently, it would be the Sierra Foothills. I like the small towns of Auburn, Grass Valley, Nevada City, and Placerville. I spend a lot of time up there. The people are very laid back and it gets more variety in weather.

No, its called living smart. Its a life choice. Sure- I could do like most people and go out and buy a shiny new car or truck every 4-5 years, spend money on toys like stereos, rims, and little chrome bits here and there, and so on. But that's why most Americans are in the hole. Saving up has given me a lot of options I wouldn't have had if I had blown it all on bigscreen TVs and video games. If Most Americans lived well below their means, we wouldn't have had such a massive implosion of the economy.

Who said I was a miserable poor sap? Different strokes for different folks. I don't give a rat's ass about most stuff anyway. I did when I was younger. I had a hell of a nice home stereo, a then new truck ( which I still own) and all kinds of gadgets. Now I don't care. The old TV I have works fine. So does the truck, and the other stuff I've got. Personally, I get a lot of enjoyment fixing things. The longer my old truck goes, the more proud of it I am. Not to mention it means one more year of no truck payments. I'm not gonna' crap all over your preference. if you want to buy stuff- go for it.

word. i hear ya. if that's your thing thats cool. I remember when I was a kid some of the other kids were fine playing with sticks and rocks while I was enjoying my Sega Genesis. Like you said different strokes for different folks. I just dont see the point in not living life to the fullest and enjoying what you've earned the right to enjoy.

My initial point though was that you are whining about your situation but you have put YOURSELF in that situation and have been there for quite some time so you have no one to blame but yourself.

I don't agree with you. The reason is because much of what I mentioned are elements beyond my control. I came here because of a job. I didn't know the first thing about Cali. I just knew it was on the other side of the country. I soon found out it was expensive. So I started working hard to make more money. But at the same time the housing bubble happened and even though I was making more and more, those prices were going up 20% a year to the point where even a great salary couldn't cover the costs. I knew the bubble would burst so I decided to wait until it did and see how cheap things got.

But now the bubble has burst, there's talk of prices actually starting to go up again, and even after the bust, the prices are still very high. So I tried, I waited, and now I am done and no longer want to live here. I had no control over those events and yes- I find it very frustrating. I think yesterday was pretty much the last straw for me. So yes- I am bitching. I will be glad when I am out of here where my money gets more for its value.

I moved back to TN from LA about 3 years ago. I moved back here for pretty much the same reasons that have already been mentioned.

More power to you Bob if that's what you want to do. I can relate to your situation.

exactly, there was a point that even if you made $150k a year, you still couldnt afford a condo, much less a house (los angeles area). the condos near my work were selling from $750k to $1.5 million. i think they are down to $500k to 1 million now.

    EDIT:
ohh... and $750k would get you an 750 square foot condo with a single parking space.

    EAmonkey,
What's the situation in LA? In the SF Bay Area, prices are cheaper mostly in the ghetto/ far-flung burb areas. The prices in most of the decent areas are lower, but they're still really high. The same in LA?

prices are certainly cheaper in LA than they were, but its still expensive.
but there are deals to be had in the valley or in the Inland Empire (i would guess under $300k). my sister just got a new, 1800 square foot condo in studio city for ~$350k.

Yep, been brewing at home for about a year now. I've done several extract kit ales. I'd like to get to where I put together my own recipes, but I still feel like I've got a lot to learn before I can do that. Needless to say, I haven't quite worked up to a trappist beer yet. Can't wait though.

I've been brewing for 2-3 years now. The trick to brewing your own is to make clones of beers you like. There are lots of online recipes out there. I would bet nashville has a brewing supply store somewhere. You just write down the recipe, buy the stuff, and make it.

The trick to Trappist beer is the recipe and aging. Usually a year or so. That and it is usually highly carbonated. I made a clone of Gulden Draak last year. I let it age 6 months. Wound up being pretty decent. Not as carbonated as I wanted. Around 12% ABV. I have a Tres Pistoles clone aging right now.
