My 05 double cab 4x4/auto now has about 124k on it. The transmission has never been touched, but I plan on doing a filter change and refill next month. Ever since I bought it the truck would downshift all by itself into 3rd if I was on the brakes lightly going downhill at around 35-45 MPH. But the last time I drove it (and it was pretty heavily loaded with a 1/2 yard of soil in the bed) it was actually doing this on flat ground (foot off the gas, but not on the brake) at about the same speed. And it didn't shift back into 4th until it was at about 3200 rpm which seemed kind of odd to me. I've never noticed my wife's 00 4runner downshifting like this and honestly this is the first automatic transmission vehicle I have ever bought for myself in the 22 years I've been driving.

I have noticed mine downshifts when I get on the brakes going down hill. I have a farily steep hill in my sub. and every time I go down the hill I have to get on the brakes lightly to keep the speed down, if I dont It will coast to 45 to 50 on that hill and the speed limit is 30. It seems to do this most every time and I had wondered if it was normal as it seems like it should shift back up. Mine is an 11 and only has about 2600 miles on it.

Glad to hear it's normal. I bought the truck with 113k on it and discovered shortly thereafter the transmission hadn't ever been touched. Neither had the rear diff or t-case but I already took care of them. I do plan on getting to the filter and refill next month. The trucks been sitting pretty much since I got my Mustang and FJ40 out anyhow. Right now it's still full of topsoil. There is a filter in the transmission, but it's a metal screen type that many people never touch or simply remove, clean and re-install. Personally I want to just change it and clean the pan out thoroughly before I refill it. It can't do anything but good. I need to drain and refill the power steering and coolant too.
